Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, illustrates the hardships of the common man in great detail. The use of imagery in this book displays life as it exists in the hostile real-world. The human plight is displayed by a turtle, and his struggle to reach the other side of a road. As the turtle is about to reach his goal, it is returned to its original location, but it does not hesitate, and continues across the road until it reaches the other side. Much like the turtle, the Joad Family and Jim Casy undergo tremendous heartaches and burdens, yet they stay true to their dreams, and never give up. While the Joad family is moving from Oklahoma to California, Ma Joad holds the family together, because she believesa broken-family will never be able to accomplish their mammoth task. This feeling is expressed when she doesn't allow the two cars to split up, and arrive at California at different times. Pa Joad was a hardworking man, who is uplifted from his normal way of life, and is forced to account for his family not starving. He does not handle this move very well, and throughout the book, he is confused, and not as headstrong as Ma. Steinbeck uses Tom Joad as paradoxical character in this novel. He is a very complicated individual, who is a tremendous asset and at the same time, a tremendous burden. His parole causes his family an unneeded worry, while his ability to get work while very few people do, also benefitted his family. He is the main protagonist for his family, with his independent nature.
Optimism is expressed through the Joad family along with Jim Casy to show the benefit of people uniting in order to accomplish their goals. Each of their journeys has its ups and downs, setbacks and positives. Each starts doing something and ends up doing something else, but the consistency of moving forward remains existent. Steinbeck uses the theme of forward progression to maintain an optimistic tone throughout the novel. This creates a positive life lesson because Steinbeck uses his characters as examples ofnormal people, trapped in an unfair world of persecution and downfalls, yetremaining sympathetic and heroic, if defeated.
