Affirmative Action, Why It Should Continue To Prevail

The equal protection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment provides all persons regardless of race or gender are entitled to equality under the law. Throughout our history as a great Nation there has been one repeating inequality which pervades our history. This inequality can be defined as an inability to judge a person based on their merit rather than the color of their skin. What makes America unique is the promise that every dream can be achieved. Hard work and determination, not race, gender, religion or socio-economic status determines how far a person can rise.

The promise of equality in America was just that, only a promise. In order to assure minorities' were given access to the same opportunities to achieve the American dream, The Civil Rights Act of 164 was passed. The Civil Rights Act of 164made discrimination illegal and established equal employment opportunity for all Americans regardless of race, gender or religion. Following the Civil Rights Act of 164, President Johnson issued Executive Order 1146.Executive Order 1146 mandated affirmative action goals for all federally funded programs and moved monitoring and enforcement of affirmative action programs out of the White House and into the Labor Department.

Custom Essays on affirmative action

The Civil Rights Act of 164, Executive Orders and other important Supreme Court Decisions have not stopped racism. Overt racism is alive and well in all areas of U.S. society. For example, in 11 Diane Sawyer with ABC- TV filmed two men, one African American and one white, who were matched for age, appearance, education, and other qualities. They were followed for a day by a camera crew. The white man received service in stores while the African American was ignored. In other instances, the African American man was monitored very closely while shopping at a department store. The department store employees watched the African American man as if they expected him to steal an item from the store. The white man was offered a lower price and better financing at a car dealership. There were jobs where the African American was turned down, and apartments for rent after the African American man was told they were no longer available.

The Dian Sawyer story on racism in America, makes a very strong argument, racism is alive and well in modern America. Because minorities are treated differently than white persons, affirmative action programs are not only important, they are essential to ensuring all persons are treated equally regardless of skin color, gender or religion.

In the wake of -11 and the tragedy which befell America, many Muslim Americans have recently experienced racism. The New York Times reported hundreds of examples where Arab Americans were unfairly treated. Many Arab Americans lost their jobs, others were beaten orrefused employment .

If America is to live up to its promise that every American should be treated equal,Affirmative action programs must not only survive, they must be part of the American dream.

The Tempest by William Shakespeare, in particular the character Caliban, is important because it reflects upon issues surrounding the Caribbean during that time.In the play, Prospero comes to a foreign island and encounters Caliban.Caliban, who is a native of the land, is very friendly to Prospero and shows him everything on the island.Prospero in turn tries to civilize Caliban by educating him and teaching him language. This plan proves to be a failure as Caliban doesn't appreciate the kindness that Prospero has showed him.Caliban rapes Prospero's daughter Miranda, and also curses Prospero for educating him, saying "You taught me language, and my profit on't Is, I know how to curse. The red-plague rid you For learning me your language!"Prospero then takes Caliban's freedom away and makes him his slave. Before Prospero's arrival on the island, Caliban was leading a simple and happy life. However, when Prospero tries to civilize Caliban, it forces Caliban to live a lifestyle that is not his own; he is forced to learn Prospero's language and customs.

The confrontation between Prospero and Caliban can be compared to the conflict between Europe and the "New World" during the 16th century.Prospero represents the European explorer; he travels to a new land (New World) and conquers the natives (Caliban).Caliban represents the native inhabitants; he is perfectly happy with his simple life until the foreigners (Prospero) force their culture onto him."When Columbus arrived at Turtle Island in 14, he wrote in his journal that the native people were strong, well built, and extremely generous. He also wrote that with his weapons and 50 men, he can subdue the entire population." The Europeans taught the natives how to speak English and understand simple phrases. The sole purpose of this was so the slaves would understand the commands given to them by their masters. The Europeans also "civilized" the natives by forcing them to adopt a different culture. On the outside, it seems like the Europeans had good intentions when they tried to civilize and educate the natives; however, they only did so to benefit from them. The Europeans took advantage of the natives' gentle nature, enslaved their race, and destroyed the people's lives.

The line by Caliban, "The red-plague rid you For learning me your language!" sums up his feelings toward Prospero. This feeling is exactly what the original inhabitants of the New World felt when the Europeans arrived. They basically wished that the Europeans had never came, so they would never have been "educated and civilized' in a negative way.The arrival of the Europeans led to the downfall of the native people, just like Prospero's arrival led to Caliban's eventual downfall.

The novel Looking for Alibrandi is centered around the growth and development of the relations among the three generations of Alibrandi women. Josephine Alibrandi, a Catholic school girl is the protagonist in her final high school year. She attends St. Marthas, a wealthy catholic school in Sydneys eastern suburbs, on an academic scholarship. Her Italian origin and illegitimacy have been the reason for a lot of persecution in her life. Josephine is a stubborn, melodramatic, confused, young girl who wants to 'be accepted by someone other than the underdog. (Page ) She doesnt see that her problems amount to nothing when compared to other struggling children in the world, but she feels trapped. Trapped in her Italian roots, even though she was born in Australia Josie has no privacy. ' Telecom would go broke if it werent for the Italians. (Page 11) I think that Josie is like any other typical teenage girl, trying to come to grips with her own identity and having to grow up. She copes with her ethnicity, sexuality, illegitimacy, and her family problems remarkably well, until she is faced with meeting her father for the first time. I was puzzled when Josie revealed absolutely no emotion when she knew she was standing face to face with her father for the first time in her life. I feel as though I can easily relate to Josephine Alibrandi. This makes me feel comfortable reading this book, knowing I have similar concerns as she does. Nonna Katia is Josies grandmother. She is like any other typical old Italian woman. She is tied to her Italian traditions and has no compassion for Australians. Katie resents Josies mother a great deal for having Josie illegitimately. Nonna Katia is the main antagonist of the novel. She is constantly testing Josie and Christinas tempers. Josie and Katia fight a lot, and Katia always places the blame on Christina for being a bad mother, making Josie incredibly furious. When Josie and Christina find out that Katia is welcoming Michael Andretti, Josies father into her house, the two become apprehensive about visiting her. However, I think that Josie comes to learn that Katia is too old to adopt new habits and appreciates her grandmother for who she is. Christina Alibrandi is Josies mother. She is a relatively young mother who had Josie at a young age and brought her p all on her own. Christina teaches Josie a lot about herself and her heritage. The relationship between Christina and Josie leads toward Josies freedom and away from the problems which she brings upon herself. Christina has such strength, more than she is given credit for. However, Christina resents her mother for shunning her away when she gave birth to Josie, but at the same time is grateful to have her mother back in her life. Josie comes to realize that the perception of her mother as a victim is not shared by Christina. Christina does not see any wrong in the way she has lead her life. Looking for Alibrandi centralizes around the lives of these three women, Josephine Alibrandi, Katia Alibrandi and Christina Alibrandi.

AUTONOMOUS WORK GROUPS.

This essay discusses and investigates the factors that affect individuals by the use of autonomous work groups within modern organisation.

To carry out this investigation various sources have been used and will be referenced as applicable. The sources that have been used are journals, articles and a google search to try and get the widest view possible.

While researching this topic too much information was available. Reading the many articles was confusing and it did not state the positives and negative on the individual within the work team. Most of the articles seem to just state advantages to the organisation.

However, after narrowing it down to two articles that seemed to be the most relevant to the topic this formed the basis of the overall findings.

In writing this essay, to gain a better understanding of autonomous work groups, the history of autonomous work groups was investigated by reading aboutGeorge Elton Mayo's Hawthorne experiments. These experiments seem to be the basis and the foundation of autonomous work teams in organisations today.

Findings from the Hawthorne experiments seem to suggest autonomous work groups are a selected team of individuals who can work together

basically free of direct management or main hierarchical structure.

The set up of the teams today differs between organisations. The amount of autonomy given can be based on the type of end product or the type of working environment. However the similarities between the various types of groups can be seen in the areas of planning, activities, monitoring progress, production and staff holidays.

It has been stated in numerous articles that autonomous working teams empower individuals, however Bill Harley disagrees with this he states"Analysis shows no association between empowerment and employee autonomy".This means that individual employees may have power over their everyday fate in terms of day to day tasks, but they have no power over the organisational strategy.

Peter Carstensen view is that autonomous work groups can impact negatively on individuals in the areas of lack of competencies i.e. not understanding the entire sequence of operations in the organisation, thus not being able to work effectively.

Where individuals are not skilled in planning and scheduling thus the individual will not be able to get the timing right and targets might not be achieved.Where conflict might arise in the group if the other individuals within the group can not find solutions, this will impact team moral as a whole and certain individuals.

Lack of being able to work with other departments within the organisation can results in a breakdown in procedures again causing a negative impact on the individual. Not being able to interact socially with other groups and individuals can effect in a bad perception of an individual. Lack of good communication skills can cause individuals to pass and receive wrongful information.

Peter Carstensen says that if all the above effects can be achived this will result in greater satisfaction for the individual as long as each

How many people do you know who don't have a car?Chances are the list is a very short one.Where would we be without our cars? How would we get to school or work?In a perfect world every one would use public transport and drive smart cars. But lets face it!How often does the two o'clock bus come at two o'clock or the 5pm train come at 5pm.Public transport just isn't reliable. And who wants to be the first to own a car, which you charge at night like your mobile phone. It sounds a bit gaudy, don't you think?

Did you know that 4 people were killed on the roads in the year 001?And in the U.K. alone there are over ,000,000 cars!Every year we slaughter a great percentage of the population just because of the car.Transport is the single biggest cause of air pollution, asthma is on the increase, people are allergic to the fumes which can lead to serious illnesses and that's all before the people even go anywhere near a car!

1/84 children born today will die violently in a car crash and 1/6 will be seriously injured. And it's not just the drivers who are in danger in fact it's not even just the passengers. The number of pedestrians killed every year is almost as high.People don't realise how fast they're going, the corner was sharper than they thought the ground was slippery, the brakes aren't quite as good in the rain or the child runs out from nowhere! The list of reasons is endless.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Cars! Are they really necessary???Persuasive essay

The environment suffers too for our need fro better transport!Forests are ripped up to make room for motorways and dual carriageways. The smoke and exhaust fume pollutes the air and many animals are killed on the roads every hour.Everyone seems to at times to overlook the poor animals that loose their homes or worse still are killed due to the car.

However where would we be without the god old car?Almost every family has at least one car and for many of us it is the only way possible for us to get to work or to school. It makes life handy knowing that if you need to get somewhere in a hurry you can just go.In emergencies where would we be without ambulances, police cars and fire engines?

The car isn't all bad, its comfortable and you feel safer sitting in your own car than sitting on a train or bus with dozens of strangers. It's also a fashion statement; many people feel they are judged on the kind of person they are by the kind of car they drive. In a way this is true.A car is something you can be proud of; you work and save hard to get one so you have the right to make us of it.

I feel if cars are used wisely and responsibly they are a very worthwhile investment. How else would you get all those carrier bags back from the sales every year, or get the groceries to your door?We simply couldn't manage without our cars, and despite all the bad points many of us would be lost without them.

Please note that this sample paper on Cars! Are they really necessary???Persuasive essay is for your review only. They're a weird Mob

The film 'They're a weird mob' is directed and produced by Michael Powell. This movie is based on an Italian journalist who migrates to Australia in the 160'. The film goes through some of the problems that emigrants faced in Australia back in those days such as; understanding the language, trying to fit in with the Australian culture, finding jobs, dealing with racism etc…. the film captures most of the issues that faced emigrants while at the same time making the movie funny and also romantic.

This film is goes through the journey of an Italian journalist Nino Culotta who leaves his native country 'Italy' to migrate to Australia after his cousin promises him a job as a sports editor for a magazine called 'La Seconda Madre'a. He arrives very green, and much amusement is caused by Nino's taking too literally some of the Australian slang. Nino finds himself in a spot of bother when he goes to see his cousin and learns that he has left the journal, leaving Nino with apound debt for his ticket that was used to travel to Australia, which his cousin borrowed off Ms Kay Kelly, who later Nino falls in love with. Nino finds it very hard to understand the Australian slang and for a while in the movie refers to King's Cross as King's Bloody Cross.

Needing some money to pay back Ms Kay Kelly, Nino applies for a job as a builder's labourer with a bloke by the name of Joe Kennedy. He soon makes friends with his workmates Pat, Dennis and Jimmy after they realise that Nino is a good man, his mates teach him the Aussie lingo and local customs.Every weekend Nino goes to Bondi Beach and visits Ms Kelly so he can make a down payment on the debt owed. While at the beach he finds himself lost and confused, and then he goes for a swim on a no swim zone. This is evidence of Nino not understanding the Australian culture and customs.

Cheap Custom Essays on Review - They're a Wierd Mob

In the movie almost every spoken sentence contains either a "bloody" or "bugger" this makes the movie uniquely Australian and shows the Australian Culture involved in the movie.Nino who quickly learns how to be an Aussie falls in love with Ms Kay Kelly which makes the movie a little bit romantic and reminds people that it was not all bad for the emigrants in the 160's.

Overall, No one would probably have any desires to see this film because Australian people do not want to be reminded of what our country was like in the mid-160s. Not that reminded is the right word, for most of us either werent born or werent here in 160's, and so its easy for us to suppose that this film is nothing more than a sustained exercise in wog-bashing, and a celebration of everything weve all been earnestly trying to escape ever since the introduction of decimal currency. Most that lived and experienced life in those days would be thinking that if they saw this film, how much it will it make them cringe. However even though this film might make people cringe is a bit more moving, wittier, and more enlightened, than people might think and there is no wog bashing.

Questions on Lenin's Rule in Russia

1.Source A is very useful to a historian as evidence of the difficulties Lenin faced in implementing War Communism because the source is a directive from Lenin, from the head of the government. It is also very useful because it is a contemporary source; meaning it came into existence at the same time of the events.

Also, the content is good because you can see that Lenin was expecting peasant resistance. Evidence of this is for example where it says "..two or three machine guns," and this shows that Lenin was expecting trouble ; if there is resistance he will just shoot the peasants. Also , you can see that he was afraid that the excess grain wouldn't be sent to collection centres. Evidence for this is simply that he clearly states that the excess grain must be sent to the collection centres.

Order College Papers on Lenins Rule In Russia

Source B does not go very far as to show that Lenin was a kindly ruler. The Source doesn't really give a full picture hence it is an opinion from one of Lenin's friends, so in a way it is a biased source.

In the source Lenin is seen as a sensitive humanitarian, but we know that Lenin did do terrible gastly things. Lenin was definitely not the Christ figure that the propaganda has made him out to be.

.

There were many reasons why the Bolsheviks won the Civil War. One main reason was that Trotsky brilliantly organized the Red Army. It had very good commanders and it enabled the communists to survive. The Red guards were expanded and there was ruthlessness. The Secret Police used to terrorize the villages and had their own fighting detachments.

The reasons the Whites lost also has to be considered. For one thing, they lacked unity and were very scattered so it alienated the peasantry. There was a big lack of central purpose and cooperation. In the end, the Whites were weakened by the withdrawal of the western allied troops who provided weapons.

Also, the peasants knew that if the Bolsheviks were defeated then the land would be taken away and the land would be handed over to the nobles; meaning the return of landlords.

4.

Lenin's New Economic Policy was basically to come to terms with the peasants. The peasants were allowed to sell their surplus crops after tax, and also some of the small factories and banks were denationalised and bonuses were introduced.

The aims of the New Economic Policy was to increase food production in Russia, to end the civil war with the peasants ( Party Vs Peasantry) , and finally, it was an attempt to get industrial production going again after the chaos of the civil war. The only way that Lenin could get industrial production going again was by giving up his communist beliefs; or at least temporarily. He would be giving up his communist beliefs in the way that the Policy would be encouraging capitalist policies. The New Economic Policy gave rise to a new social class in Russia known as the NEP Men.

So, the NEP was a success in the way that it achieved all three of its aims. The situation was so tense that without the New Economic Policy the communist party would have been swept away, so it insured power.

As the Europeans integrated into North America, they also invaded the Native Americans territory. In doing this, some Europeans were arrogant and pompous, but others became friendly with them. Both the French and the British had interactions with the Native Americans. These included trading, being allies, and even going as far as intermarrying. At first, both societies got along with the Natives. It was not until the English started to move west and take the land for themselves that it became a problem with the Native Americans.Although they may have started out the same, being good friends and neighbors with the original inhabitants, the French and English in the New World developed two distinctly different relationships with them.

When the French came to the New World, they regarded the Natives as friends.Because of this friendship or understanding, it was possible for them to trade with one another. The French traders gave knives, beads, axes, hatchets, hoes, brightly colored cloths, mirrors, paints and other things of trifling value that appealed to the fancy of the Indians. The only things that the Indians had to sell or trade, and for which the French traders wanted to barter for, were the skins of furbearing animals. These included the beaver, otter, mink, muskrat, and several others found nearby that the Native Americans hunted.

When the first English came over on the Mayflower, they became friends with the Natives. The natives taught the English Pilgrims how to hunt and fish, which fruits and berries were edible, and how to use fertilizer on their crops. They traded with the Indians for furs and land, giving them in return, metal tools, cutting blades, blankets and glass and metal containers. Also the Pilgrims were able to create the first Thanksgiving, showing that their relationship with the Natives was great enough to sit all together and give thanks for a meal.

The English that settled in the Jamestown region were not like the Pilgrims in regard to the relationship built. When the English came over they were granted permission to settle the James River, but Opechancanough and Powhatan decided that the settlers would do more harm then good. The first Anglo-Powhatan War started in 160-1614.Then in 16 and 1644 the Natives tried to drive the English out of the James River area, but were unsuccessful each time.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on British vs. French Views on Native Americans

From time to time, the relationship between both the English and the French with the Native Americans has been strained.Eventually the strain would become too great for the Indians and the English to work out.The French however worked through these times and had a great ally because of it. Impressions of the Indians, however, certainly varied depending on the area of contact. Depending on whether the Europeans first met the Native Americans in war, disputes over land, or in trade would have made a great deal of difference in initial thoughts of the Indians.

Tupac Shakur is considered to be one of the best rappers to ever live. Why? Because him music is controversial, meaningful and most of all straight from his heart. Most people don't care to look past his "thug" image and his non-stop bad mouth but if they did they would discover this artist had more to say. So before you judge him, be aware of this man's remarkable life, lets start from the begging.

Tupac's rough life started before he was even born. His mother didn't tell him anything about his dad, when he was little he would ask "why don't I have a daddy" and she told him she didn't know who he was. Tupac thought his father was dead his whole life. After he was shot, and woke up at the hospital there was a man who looked just like him, and that's when he found out who his real dad was. But even after that they didn't become close. During his childhood he didn't feel like he fit in anywhere. His family moved place to place and he had no friends. He had a mental disorder and his doctor told him to write his thoughts down, to get them out in the open and he said it would help. So one day he sat down and started keeping a dairy and in his diary it said, "I want to become famous, and be an actor. Acting is a way to escape my life" in his diary he began to write poems and song lyrics. That's how he got into music.

Tupac is a successful rapper, poet and actor. His music was very opinionated. He received lots of letters from fans, saying that his music was an escape and inspirational, he got letters from concerned adults about his awful lyrics, but he didn't mind that people disliked his music because the always said what he was thinking and he always said it was easier for people to blame a loud mouth for there problems then to actually fix them themselves. One day he received a letter from the parents of a dying boy saying that their child's last wish was to possibly meet him, Tupac instantly flew to his side in Maryland, and after the boy passed away, renamed his publishing company Joshua's Dream in his memory, even though it meant that he lost millions of dollars in sponsorship and naming rights. The government even got involved. Dan Quale, former vice president said Tupac's music had no place in society. He gave reasons for this statement saying it was due to the lyrics of his music. But his fans fought back and asked which lyrics in particular because some thought the lyrics the government disliked so much were his views on the American government.

Most of you know that Tupac died when he was only 5 years old. A lot of his fans still believe he is alive today, or that hes going to return. There are a lot of stories about what people actually think happened to him. But what we do know is that he was shot five times shortly leaving from a Mike Tyson fight and his mother took him off life support on September 1, 16. His murder remains unsolved till this day.

Desire The Fuel for Success

Today people probably think of desire as the emotion of wanting something. This understanding of the word probably came from its origin. Derived from the Latin word, "desiderare," desire means, "to long for or wish for" (Online Etymology Dictionary)".However, desire has a deeper meaning. Desire doesn't just mean to wish for something, but it stands for what drives us to work hard to achieve our goals. Desire fuels success because it makes us work harder to be the best.

Desire means "to long or hope for" ("Desire" Merriam 11). This definition doesn't do any justice to the word. To hope, sounds like wishing something would happen just because it would be nice if it did. Just hoping for something doesn't get the job done. Sometimes it takes a little hard work to increase the chances of it happening. In today's society we want things handed to us because we aren't willing to work hard to earn it. We just hope that something good will happen to us. To desire something, is to be willing to give up almost anything to have it, and without that demeanor it will be hard to be successful.

A word synonymous to desire is "craving," which is the type of desire an athlete feels to be the best at what he does ("Desire" Roget's415). When an athlete tastes success for the first time he becomes addicted to it. This addiction or craving encourages athletes to work harder and become better. When an athlete is exhausted, he continues to push himself because the feeling of success is so sweet, and he would do anything to experience that feeling again. This work ethic comes from the burning desire all athletes have for success. Behind every success there is a desire. Desire makes us who we are.

Desire is not only something felt by just one person, but can be felt throughout a whole group of people, like a team. A successful team desires to win because the disgust of a loss hurts so much. The desire of the team pushes them to work together and strengthen their weaknesses. Without desire, a team is nothing because it has no heart. If a team doesn't desire success, then there is no sense in having a team. The same goes for life. Without the desire to be the best, there is no purpose in life, for being just average is not good enough.

Desire is just as important for those who are in the work force, as it is for an athlete. These days find a job is very difficult, and only those who truly desire to have a job are going to get one. People who have high positions at major corporations didn't just get those positions handed to them. They probably had to start off doing a lower entry job, but ended up getting to where they are at now because of the desire they had. These people worked the long hours and exceeded the expectations of their bosses.Because of their desire, they did whatever they had to, to impress their supervisors.

A successful life requires a desire. With the passion to achieve our goals that desire gives us, anything is possible. Those people out there who don't desire anything are the least successful because someone without a desire is without a purpose.

The stream of consciousness novel depends on the inner thoughts and emotions of a character. To show the significance of these flux of ideas, and to illuminate the themes and characters different tichniques are used. The technique used exist in the stream of consciousness novel by symbolism. How symbolism is used will be explained by referring to James Joyce novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.

Motif is a technique which means phrases or words that are repeated. The repitition is used to give a hidden meaning. For example, in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man the "moocow" is an indirect associattion to the idea of motherhood, the main character's mother, and mother land which is Irland. The figures are juxtapositions and indications to the theme of repressing authority that is symbolized by the figure of mother, father, and priest symbols. The theme introduced by this motif is the repressive nature of his country.

The main character of James Joyce novel called Stephen. In order to show the main theme, which is Stephen finding his artistic talent and knowing his path in life, Joyce used many symbols that appear to be with no relation to each other but by associating the meaning of each symbol, the whole theme could be seen. The main theme is introduced in the first section of the novel. The first section is like a prologue to introduce the inner conflict that Stephen is not aware of yet. For example, the repitition of "road" at the first page of the novel; it is a symbol to the two roads, which Stephen has to chose from. They are two paths one of them is religion and the other is art. The novel shows Stephen's conflict in chosing one of the two paths, until he discovers who he really is. He discovers he is an artist.

Stephen is not aware at first of him self as an artist. It is symbolized in the novel by "his short sightness". He is blind to the truth that he is an artist and is walking in the path of religion thinking this is what he wants. While he is in search for him self, "his short sightness" allude him to think his comfort is to become a priest. However, once he is offered to be a priest, he finds him self rejecting the idea. At that time, he finds him self in a moment of inlightenment where symbols, such as "white" that meant to him coldness and sickness, which is associated to the immage of the repressive church, has a different meaning. "White" after his inlightenment means to him "mortal youth and beauty". In chapter 4, Stephen describes a girl he imagins as having "white fringes" and "feathering of soft white down". "white" is associated to purity, calmness and clearness. The woman image and her beauty is only a symbol to the beauty of art. The woman symbolizes his path of art. As a result of it, he finds his true path and his true desire of being an artist.

Critical thinking

Case Odwalla

The name "Odwalla" does not only represent for the high quality and healthy

an unforgettable crisis in 16 from causing the death of a baby and the illness of several

people. If this problem happens to other companies, they usually deny for the guilt and do

not take any responsibility. Unlike typical business, Odwalla took full responsibility and

tried their best to solve the problem. Its good intention paid off. At the end, the situation

got better because people realized how hard the company tried to fix everything. This is a

very good lesson for every business and for us.

Odwalla executives and employees used many critical thinking skills to help the

company got through the crisis. In chronological order, these are some examples about

what they did.

When Odwalla executives got a phone call from Washington State health reported

about the illness causing by their juice, they decided to recall all apple juice and carrot

juice-based product. They used Inference to conclude the situation. That call only told

them the patients had consumed the juice. No one knew about the real reason of the

incident. They also used Analysis to make a decision to recall because when they

looked at their values honesty, integrity, and respect, they realized what is the most

important thing for them.

The second action the executives, Greg and Stephen, took was doing the

interviews as many as they could instead of using lawyer or spokesman to do that. The

critical skills they used were Interpretation and Analysis. Greg and Stephen knew the

people would feel better if they heard the information from Odwalla executives, and the

interview was very important because it was the way not only to communicate, but also

to express the feeling directly to the public.

After the first two actions, the company tried so hard to find the cause of the

incident. Odwalla provided Food and Drug Administration (FDA) access to all of their

operations and procedures. Their goal was finding the way to avoid any type of food

safety problem in the future. This showed how open-minded and truth seeking they were.

They accepted they had problem and truly wanted to get to answer. They used Self-

regulation to improve themselves.

Odwalla knew if they wanted to reintroduce their juice to the market, they had to

make sure nothing could contaminate in their juice. Therefore, they studied until they

found the technology called "flash pasteurization". They gained trust again from their

customer with this technology. This is Systematic thinking. They used reasons to draw

the logical conclusion. They also used Analysis and Inference to get those reasons.

Odwalla used critical thinking to get through their crisis successfully. Every

action they took they used at least one of the six cognitive skills that comprise critical

thinking. In business world, executive has to make a decision fast and effective all the

time, especially in crisis. Thus, we should practice our critical thinking skill as much as

possible because when that moment comes, we have to respond it immediately. If we

have the strong skills, we can find the best solution for the problem.

Canada has long taken a forceful stand, consistent with international standards on human rights, in the fight against terrorism. Canada has developed policies and laws that are based on the principles that terrorism must be prevented, perpetrators of terrorist acts must be brought to swift justice, and terrorists should be denied sanctuary and support.

Combatting terrorism requires international cooperation and coordination. Canada has worked in various international fora, principally the G7/8 and the United Nations, for over twenty years to develop legal tools and international standards to combat terrorism. There are twelve international conventions which address specific terrorist acts such as hostage taking, hijacking, terrorist bombings; and support activities such as terrorism financing. Canada has signed all twelve international counter-terrorism conventions and has ratified all of them. In the G8, Canada meets regularly with experts to set international standards on counterterrorism and to address current and emerging challenges.

For example, as technology improves and trading and economic systems become more integrated, the ability of terrorists to move their funds between jurisdictions complicates the tasks of tracing and confiscating their assets. To learn more about Terrorism Financing.

Our efforts to keep Canadians safer also extends to the transportation sector. To learn more about Counter-terrorism and transportation.

Cyber crime consists of specific crimes dealing with computers and networks (such as hacking) and the facilitation of traditional crime through the use of computers (child pornography, hate crimes, telemarketing /Internet fraud). In addition to cyber crime, there is also "computer-supported crime" which covers the use of computers by criminals for communication and document or data storage. While these activities might not be illegal in and of themselves, they are often invaluable in the investigation of actual crimes. Computer technology presents many new challenges to social policy regarding issues such as privacy, as it relates to data mining and criminal investigations.

Canada has played a key role in both the development of information technology and in the efforts to deal with new challenges that arise from its use. Solutions to the new challenges posed by information technology are inherently horizontal in nature and require an inclusive approach to policy development, involving a wide variety of stakeholders both inside and outside government. Within the federal government, departments dealing with law enforcement, national security, criminal justice, the private sector, foreign policy, critical infrastructure and social issues are all involved in the ongoing efforts to develop these solutions. Coordinating an inclusive Canadian position, intended for international distribution, is one of the main challenges of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. In recent work, on cyber crime DFAIT has sought to include not just relevant federal government actors but also members of the private sector and non-governmental organizations.

On the issue of cyber crime, Canada is an active participant in an number of international organizations such as the G8 Group of Senior Experts on Transnational Organized Crime (Lyon Group), the Committee of Experts on Crime in Cyberspace of the Council of Europe (PC-CY), and the OAS Group of Government Experts.
