Gene and Finny
Friends despite differences
Gene and Finny had their respective differences between each other throughout the story A Separate Piece, but were the best of friends nevertheless.Their ideas varied greatly when it came to academics, athletics, and general life activities.Despite these differences, the two did understand each other in the end.
Gene was a quiet kid, in contrast to Finny's wild personality.Gene was often not the main attraction of the group when he was around.Finny, on the other hand, was the person who everyone paid attention to whenever there was a gathering. This was shown in the book when Finny repeatedly made up rules to the game of Blitzball, which he invented, and everyone else just went along with them, especially Gene. Also in that scene, Gene shows that he is a passive type of person in that he keeps going by Finny's rules no matter how little sense he thinks they make.
Within school, the two boys are almost complete opposites.Gene, as shown in the book, always tried his hardest and put in a great amount of time studying for his classes. The best example of this was when he mentioned that he would rather not go to the beach with Finny, he would like to stay and study for an upcoming trigonometry test the next morning.Finny, in contrast, barely pulls C's in all of his classes and claims that he just doesn't get school. He states this in the room with Gene, and basically puts in no time studying.
Athletics are another category in which the two boys vary in great degree.Gene is not exactly the athletic type of person, as he shows when he signs up to be the assistant crew manager, instead of any actual sporting teams. In contrast, Finny was the best athlete in school before the incident on the tree.Everyone also admired his athletic ability, including Gene, as he mentioned several times while they were riding their bikes to the beach.
Despite these differences, Gene and Finny, throughout the story are the best of friends.I believe that the differences that these boys have actually made them more like one complete person when together. The best comparison of Gene and Finny that I can give is that of a breakable plastic Easter egg.The two halves of the egg could fit together with another egg in the package, but it just would not be the same because of color or size, or in Gene and Finny's case personality and interests.I found Gene and Finny to be a very interesting and unique pair and that is why I believe they worked so well together as friends.
