Oppression according to Frye

When reading Frye's article on oppression, it made me realize that oppression comes in different aspects of any person's life as much as a person's age, sex, race, sexual orientation, economic status, or anything that a person could be categorized under. Oppression is a form of discrimination. In this paper, I plan to show how many Frye's definition of oppression relates any general person.

I would like to relate Frye's definition to a guy named Joe, but first let me explain his situation. Joe was born to a black, single parent, lower class household along with two younger sisters. Joe didn't have a father figure in his life, so he was easily swayed to the consequences of the "street" life. Being in a lower class neighborhood caused Joe to go to a school that had low funding, therefore there were no programs to keep him off the streets. Joe's mother worked two jobs so she wasn't around enough to direct him. Under all of these oppressed circumstances in which Joe was a victim to, he joined a gang and began to sell drugs to have a sense of belonging in his society. Joe felt oppressed and confined to this behavior because his was a young, black, poor male with no other options.

Now let's examine Frye's definition of oppression. Joe was "confined" by the "forces and barriers" of being born to a black, single parent, lower class family. Joe had no "good choices" of what to do with himself since he didn't have any guidance at home and no after school activities due to his circumstances of his "forces and barriers". Therefore, he chose the "bad choices" that were set up by the society for their "benefit". Lastly, Joe felt that his ending factor was a condition that he was oppressed to membership of because of his race and gender.

I feel that with us focusing and comparing Joe's circumstances with Frye's definition of oppression should help us understand Joe's situation. Frye's definition pinpoints all of Joe's major downfalls. Like many young, black males, Joe was oppressed by society to make them think that gangs and drug dealing is the only way. In light of that, a person's standpoints in life can and will in most cases, oppress them into a bad or uncompromising situation.

Henry Ford was born in Dearborn, Michigan on July 0, 186.From a young age he had preferred working with machinery and mechanics. At 16, he started working for Detroit Edison company, advancing from machine - shop apprentice to chief engineer within a few years.

It was at this time in which he began his experiments with the internal combustion engine and in 10 he left Detroit Edison and set up his own company- The Motor Ford Company. At this time, cars were expensive and only the rich could afford them. The goal of Ford was to " build a car for the multitude."His first step was to design a model T which was a simple, dependable, sturdy car.It offered no factory options- not even color. The Model T was cheaper than other cars, but not cheap enough for the "multitude".He knew that he had to find a more efficient way to produce the model T in order to lower the price.

Ford and his team went on many excursions to other industries hoping to find ideas, and in their search they found four basic principles that would further their goal interchangeable parts, continuous flow, division of labor and reducing wasted effort. His greatest inspiration came from the meat-packaging houses and the mill-grain conveyor belt.Ford already used

interchangeable parts, all he needed to do was fine-tune his cutting tools and machines. And once the machines were adjusted low skilled workers could operate them, replacing the highly skilled workers who had formerly made the who had made the parts by hand before.

"We hire a man, not his history."

To improve the flow of work, tasks needed to be done consecutively, with minimum time spent in set-up.He then split the assembly line of the Model T into84 parts. He then used the conveyor belt to transport car parts from station to station, eliminating the excess time it took transporting each item.

Putting those 4 principles into play caused Ford to produce cars at record breaking speeds. This meant that Ford could lower prices, making the first affordable car.Ford was also able to pay his workers five dollars a day, twice the amount of competing companies, all while decreasing their work hours. This made his workers more sufficient and also made them potential buyers.

The Model T also eliminated restrictions on travel, allowing people to live farther away from their place of employment. This enabled people to live in the suburbs which grew increasingly in the 10's.

Introduction

Professions are an integral part of society. Their contributions have been regarded as indispensable. For generations, people have aspired to be professional, whether in the field of medicine, law, engineering, architecture or accounting, to name but a few. The logic of this aspiration is the higher social status, the respect of the general public and the greater wealth which membership of a profession carries with it. In short, the professions are generally recognised as the elites of society.

However, rapid social changes have eroded this image. With increased literacy and higher levels of education, not only are the number ofprofessions on the increase, but the public are becoming sceptical of them. One of the prime factors why professions are under close scrutiny is the decline of professional ethics, which have always been considered the basis of public confidence. The subject of ethic is not new, but the attention given to it by thy legislators and especially the media has raised the awareness of the public about ethical transgressions, particularly among the respected professions. It is indeed a serious matters in terms of professional survival. If society perceives no public benefit in the service performed by the professions, then it will withdraw its trust and confidence in them and, in the end, there will be no profession. To keep abreast with the pace of social change , the professions must carry out continual evaluation aiming to serve the ever changing environment. Professional ethics -the guiding force of the professions-will have to be adjusted to provide more relevance to the existing circumstances.

The accounting profession is a critical and indispensable element in any economy that depends on private capital. The intention of this essay is to explore the issues pertaining to professional ethics in the accounting profession. First, a definition of profession will be sought; basic attributes of the professions will be identified; and a differentiation made about what makes an occupation grouping a profession. Second, the subject of ethics will be pursued by examining the development of professional ethics and the need for them in the accounting profession. Recent developments in the Anglo-American accounting scence will also be traced.

All existentialists have followed the teachings that stress the importance of passionate individual action in deciding questions of both morality and truth. They have insisted, accordingly, that personal experience and acting on ones own convictions are essential in arriving at the truth. As a result, the understanding of a situation by someone involved in that situation is superior to that of a detached, objective observer. This emphasis on the perspective of the individual agent has also made existentialists suspicious of systematic reasoning. Existentialist writers have been deliberately unsystematic in the exposition of their philosophies, preferring to express themselves in aphorisms, dialogues, parables, and other literary forms. Despite their antirationalist position, however, most existentialists cannot be said to be irrationalists in the sense of denying all validity to rational thought. They have held that rational clarity is desirable wherever possible, but that the most important questions in life are not accessible to reason or science.

This quote expresses a man who uncovers a document that exhibits a crime of family and treachery. A man who had made a fortune overseas had come back to his hometown, with his where his mother and sister had been running a small hotel in the village where he was born. He decided to surprise them but he stayed in their hotel under an assumed name. At dinner he showed them his fortune and still not knowing that the man was their family they murdered him for his money. When his wife came the next day and revealed his identity they both committed suicide. The anonymous man who had read the newspaper article stated that in a sense the tragedy was unbelievable but also in a sense he feels it was justifiable for the man was asking for trouble playing foolish tricks.

An individual who has no feelings of shock and disgust in reference to this story is one who does not feel or care, therefore having an existentialist frame of mind. Like Mersault when his mother died, like Mersault when he shot an Arab man, like Mersault when he went to prison, he was nonchalant, unapologetic and he simply was not phased. The anonymous man in the story, the reader of the article, had the audacity to even say the man who was murdered by his family for money in the newspaper article deserved what he got which was a hammer in his skull.
