Corporate Responsibility

Building a company that does the right thing might not be cheap or easy, but organizations that have such a foundation can avoid crises and show real returns.Corporate social responsibility has become the business issue of the 1st century. In the wake of government cutbacks on spending, businesses have been pressured to play a larger role in ensuring that they make the ethical and prudent decision.

Definition

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is the overall relationship of the corporation with all of its stakeholders customers, employees, communities, owners/investors, suppliers and competitors. Elements of social responsibility include investment in community programs, employee relations, creation and maintenance of employment, and financial performance. It appears that different organizations have framed different definitions, although there is considerable common ground between them. To simplify this definition, CSR is about how companies manage the business processes to produce an overall positive impact on society.

Role

Do the managers of public corporations have the option of managing them in the public interest? It is apparent that society has deemed our corporations to act ethical. These corporations' objectives must reach beyond seeking profits but also developing moral minimum standards of behavior. No longer is it acceptable for corporations to have only one agenda, to increase profits so long as it stays within the rules of the game. The rules have changed; the golden rule of engaging in open and free competition without deception or fraud is now just a small aspect of how corporations interact with the public.

Self Interest

Was New York State Electric and Gas (NYSEG) Project Share program altruistic, or were they acting with their own self-interest in mind? Thomas Hobbes's indicates, "…A person will realize that she or he has no moral obligations than those obligations that she or he assumes and are only acting on those obligations in self-interest…." NYSEG had the opportunity to act like their competitors and simply shut off the power and write it off as bad debit. This would not necessary be in NYSEG best self-interest.NYSEG had a duty to solve a social problem and treating one's customer's well is a means to maximizing shareholder wealth. This program had a direct impact on NYSEG's bottom line, when compared to the average U.S. utility company; NYSEG's bad debt is 0 percent lower. The company clearly indicated that some of the money spent for the corporate responsibility program was recovered. The retained customers were able to pay their bills through the Project Share program. It would appear that NYSEG's self-interest meet the criteria for social responsibility to solve a social problem and at the same time, their program helped increase shareholders wealth. In this case, Hobbes's assumption about self-interest is clearly prevalent.

In conclusion, business has become, in the last half century, the most powerful institution on the planet. The dominant institution in any society needs to take responsibility. Every decision that is made, every action that is taken, must be viewed with skepticism. There is a very gray line between self-interest and what is altruistic.

Is Jimmy Blacksmith Evil!

Jimmy Blacksmith was not evil, he was somebody driven to the unthinkable because he had all this anger and frustration bottled up inside of him, and all these emotions confused him. Evil means morally bad, wicked or harmful, Jimmy was non of these things, he was a victim of racial prejudice.

The first way in which Jimmy got driven to his anger, was when he had gone to find a job and he did his job all correctly and put all his hard work into it, but his boss would always make up an excuse so they wouldn't have to pay him fully. This happened on a number of occasions and because he was black he couldn't do anything about it, there was nobody to complain to or tell if this happened because black people were always wrong to the white. Even after he did a job the boss would never give him a reference.

When he was young at school he was misunderstood. One day on a school day he had an important aboriginal ritual to go to and when he got back to school he got whipped.

Cheap College Papers on Is Jimmy Blacksmith Evil?

One of the jobs that Jimmy had was one that betrayed his aboriginal friends, he was asked to kill them. He did this and was so ashamed of what he did that he burned his uniform and quit his job. I think this shows in a lot of ways that Jimmy was not evil, if Jimmy was evil he wouldn't have been disappointed in himself and burn his clothes.

Another way in which people drove him to madness is when he was getting married to a white woman, a lady asked if she was a pure white person, because she was so shocked she repeated this question more than once. I think that Jimmy Blacksmith was fed up with all the smart comments he got from people especially the ones who were happy to see that his son was not really his and was white. When his wife was having the baby, he was not allowed to help or go near the house, even when the baby was born he was not allowed to go in, he found out that his wife had given birth to a baby boy when some other visitors who had seen the baby were on there way out and told him. Jimmy was so happy that he had a baby boy that he started dancing.

Jimmy's younger brother and uncle came to meet the wife and baby, and let them stay with them. Jimmy was living on the land that he had been working onfor the last few months with his wife, he got paid in groceries. One day the boss made up an excuse that Jimmy had not been working as hard as he usually dose, and he had turned his land into a 'Black camp' so he didn't get any food or groceries to feed his family. This made Jimmy angry, so his uncle and himself went to confront the boss's wife, but she did not have any pity for Jimmy. She started making jokes and then ordered them to go away. But that was it for Jimmy, he could not take any more so he killed them. This was out of anger and rage, he was not thinking right, I think that he didn't know haw to handle it so he used violence. After this Jimmy declared war. He ran away with his brother, even though his brother did not approve of the violence and killing.

I think the main reason why Jimmy killed people is because he didn't know how to get out of the situations that he got himself into. I don't think Jimmy was evil, the word 'evil' is too strong, I think that the white people were the real enemies because they were the ones who started to use violence in the first place. The white people were unfair to the aborigines, and Jimmy was the only one who tried to stand up to them.

After seventeenth-century Japan was forced from isolation into contact with the western world, Japanese music was first brought to the ears of people beyond the country's shores. Distinct and ethereal though it is, the development and various roles of a few of Japan's many pre-modern styles shows not the expression of a singular Japanese tradition, but rather the intermingling of the music belonging to cultures and kingdoms as distinct as China, India, Vietnam, Korea, and Indonesia. From different traditions different purposes are derived-court music from Korea, folk from Indonesia, and Buddhist chant and folk songs from China-the country from which most Japanese instruments are derived. In addition, the use of music, particularly the rhythm of the taiko drum is essential to the rituals and dances used in Shinto, the native animist religion of Japan. Later on in history it become used for historical narrative and drama-all styles with a distinctly Japanese bent, but which are in the debt of the earlier, transplanted forms of music.

At the literal beginning of written Japanese history, the rulers of the country were adopting methods of government and philosophies from the highly sophisticated Chinese court. Buddhism was one of these, and along with it came Shomyo, monastic chanting of the Buddhist scriptures in a kind of "overtone" singing that was to later influence at least one other style of music developed by Buddhist monks, Heike Biwa.

The cultural sway held by China was immense-not only in Shomyo and folk songs (which were sometimes actually sung in Chinese, a foreign language with no linguistic relationship to Japanese) but in the music of the court, called gagaku. The instruments of gagaku (primarily wind and string, but also percussion)are based on Chinese ones- koto, a zither, is based on the guzheng, the four-stringed biwa on the pipa (a lute). The shakuhachi flute, mouth organ (sho), gong, and taiko were also used. Like Chinese music, that of the Japanese also uses a pentatonic scale and follows the same tradition of classifying scales according to the five elements and as "male" or "female."

The diverse sources of gagaku reveal themselves through the two main branches of the style-the music of the right, Komagaku, and left, Togaku (referring to their positions in the court area). The latter is the music of the T'ang court-whose influences include India, where Buddhism spread out from, and a kingdom in South Vietnam. The former is Korean in origin. Gagaku was almost always accompanied by dance or storytelling. The glory days of gagaku were not to last forever-during the middle ages it faded out of popularity, although it persisted in rural areas and it lasts up to this very day as the oldest court music still performed in the world.

Cheap University Papers on Music of Pre-Modern Japan

About the same time gagaku was losing ground, a completely different style, developed by a monk to narrate the sad story of a bloody battle between clans, performed by wandering blind outcasts playing the biwa, was starting up. This music, called Heike Biwa, after the instrument and the name of the defeated clan, was a tragic historical record, and was musically derived from Shomyo. Other styles of narrative song and the more musical lyrical song grew up in the capital city of Edo, whose ports were the first point of contact between East and West not so very long afterward, ushering in the modern age and the change, musical and otherwise, which accompanied it.

Transported by- a)gravity b) wind c)ice d) water

Sedimentary rocks

Help with essay on geology

75% all exposed rocks

-host, oil, gas, mineral, groundwater reveals earth's history

Detrital sediment- solid preexisting rock fragments accumulation ex) sand, rock, feldspar

Chemical sediment- inorganic limestone forms from a lot of calcite

a) precipitated from solution

b) organic materials (shell etc) from the oceans swamp previously dissolved minerals either precipitate from solution or extracted from water by living organisms and converted to shells, skeletons, or other organic substances. Ex) White Cliffs of Dover (chalk) accumulation of small marine organism- marine environments

Sediment transport- carried from high to low elevations (gravity) moved until medium (water, wind, ice) can no longer carry them along ex) rivers dump sediment into the ocean wind is a factor to ex) Mississippi delta.

Texture- size, shape, packing of particles coarse, beach sands fine ocean mud.

1 gravelsandsilt 4 clay (mudstone or shale)

smaller rock fragments when deposited as a sediment

-texture depends on the transport medium's ability to weather, but also to carry them ex) River flood moves more big grains, compared to the wind

Grain size- reduced during transport pulverized (glacier), worn down (stream), unchanged (oozing mud)

Ex) mudglow does not change the grain size much because of the environment

Sorting

Reveals nature of transport the medium, well sorted (wind blow silt) rounded

Poor sorted (glacial deposits) angular heavier particles deposit first, fine particles settle last.

Wind is very selective about the particles sizes so most selective transportation

-Alluvial fan- coarsest grains closer, smaller farther wedge shaped bdoy

- The more vigorous collision = more rounded, and farther from the parent rock

-gypsum, calcite, more rounded

pg. 177Grain shape- softer minerals (gypsum, calcite) rounder after 10 km transport

-harder minerals quartz, feldspar rounded after 00 km of transport

fast streams- rounded grains

glaciers- angular grains

Sedimentary structures

-geological formations built up by the sediment deposition.

-pressure information about climate change, history of life

-tells us how the sediments were deposited and what the environment was like

Smooth- probably wind, rough edge- probably glacier or water, desert- smooth environment

Bedding- arrangement into distinct layers strata marked by bedding planes.

Graded bed- sediment load dumped into still water heavy coarse particles settle to bottom light fine particles land on top

Crossed beds- formation angle to underlying beds, sand dunes, stream deposits, slope, down current, ripple marks mud cracks

Coarse particles to bottom, finest to the top

Lithficication- conversion of sediments into sedimentary rocks

Frontline - Epitaph

Mike Moore suggests that there is always a negative image of aborigines being portrayed and decides to try and make a positive documentary concerning aborigines. His comment that "It's nothing more than a cheap vehicle for screening negative images," tells the audience that he is frustrated that TV reports and articles in newspapers constantly show a negative image of aborigines. He was particularly angry that his producers changed the positive image that he was trying portray into a negative image for their news report.

In some ways I agree with Mike Moore's comments. I believe that aboriginals are portrayed negatively much of the time; they are portrayed in such a way that shows the "largely white and conservative audience" that it isn't the fault of the audience but of the aborigines themselves. On the other hand I believe that these negative articles do show what is real. If something looks, and seems bad, the media will show it in a bad way making it appear that it is the aboriginals who are to blame for their image. "At the end of the day Aborigines only have themselves to blame."

Showing people as being "pathetic and poor" does tend to reinforce the notion that it is "all their own fault". Poor is defined in the Macquarie Dictionary as "having little or no wealth, goods, or means of living". Given that in our society success is measured by obtaining material benefits and wealth by work, showing someone as poor gives the viewer the impression that the person is without motivation. Aboriginals who don't share our views of material wealth are easy targets for the press. We see them lacking in motivation because they do not achieve the standard of living we see as essential or desirable.

Cheap Custom Essays on Frontline Epitaph

By far the majority of the media portrayal of aboriginals is negative. There are often stories showing aboriginals sniffing petrol, drinking to excess in public, destroying public property, being involved in violence and being reckless in the spending of government grants. However the positive aspects of aboriginal people should also be publicised. The media is often happy to promote successful aboriginal sports people, with current examples being Cathy Freeman and many AFL footballers, but is less likely to mention everyday aboriginal people making a success of their life. Aboriginal people have strong family values, a rich understanding of culture and a determination to maintain their history, but these qualities are rarely advertised.

Other media portrayals which can involve both negative and positive focus include reports relating to the Muslim community. In some instances newspapers focus on the terrorist connection and imply that Muslims in general are responsible for the terrorist attacks. However, the media also depicts them as devoted to their families and often hard working. Another current issue where media treatment can change dramatically is the subject of war and Australia's support of the United States. Some reports appear to favour peace at all costs while others advocate Australia actively participating in the preposed War. The topic of churches is also an issue with both negative and positive press coverage. The positive shows how the churches donate money to various places of need and provide support for the under privileged, whereas the negative depicts the priests as engaging in forms of child abuse.

Mike Moore's comments try to point out that negative portrayals should not be seen in isolation. It is important to ensure that both sides of any issue be addressed.

During the lifespan of a child he or she will come upon many people that have the potential to become positive role models in their lives, but the most important role models for a child to have in their lives is that of their parents.

It is difficult to raise a child in this day and age but one of the most crucial things that a parent can provide is to be a good role model to their children.A home in which both parents reside would seem to be the best environment in which to provide a positive atmosphere.A place where family time can be emphasized and a child could see loving affection and interaction between his or her parents. This kind of visual affirmation could teach respect and communication.Although there are many other scenarios in which children are raised this would seem to be the most positive.

Another atmosphere in which many children are raised today is that in which the parents or separated or divorced. It is very possible for a single parent to be an excellent role model.Having to work outside of the home and twice as hard within the home would be sure to teach a child about perseverance and determination. One important point to consider though when talking about divorced or separated families is that it isn't always the parent living with the child that has the most affect on the child's thoughts and actions.A parent who has decided to remove himself from the lives of his children might well have more impact on that child's life than they will ever realize. That child might have feelings of rejection and unworthiness.Which could have detrimental effects as the child matures into an adult.

Buy custom The Power of Positive Role Models term paper

With so many different types of families that exist today it is difficult to ascertain which have the best role models. There are families who are able to provide "stuff", and there are families which find that the greatest investment you can make in your children is time.Nobody can say for sure which families will turn out which child, but logic would say that the child who was brought up with caring, nurturing, and hands on parents would grow up with different values and expectations than a child who was not brought up with these things. After all, what they will remember when they grow up will be the special times that they all shared, holidays, family vacations, special talks, and favorite moments. What they won't remember will be the toy they had to have at the store, or the clothes from high priced stores.

Then there are families who could be considered dysfunctional by today's standards who are able to turn out an adult who is law abiding, gainfully employed, hard working, and happy with himself even with all the extra "baggage".This can prove that a child that comes from a dysfunctional family can overcome the strains of such a family life and that he isn't destined to live the life he shared with his parents. He will prove himself to be better and be more inclined to succeed.

I believe that the most valuable role model that a child can have is that of a parent. What matters most is that a child is receiving quality time and attention from their parents. If parents are respectful and courteous a child will by nature mimic what they see going on around them.Parents don't have to be wealthy just respectful, loving, and caring. The most significant thing for parents to do is do set good examples for their children and to guide them on their journey through life.

Ethics is the philosophical field which attempts to determine what is good, both for the individual and for the society as a whole. It is often defined as the science of morality. It is certainly a subject that is used in discussions about how we should live and the nature of right and wrong. The word ethics comes from the Greek word ethikos, which means "character" or "custom." For the Greeks, it meant to be appropriate or customary way to behave in society. Ethics can be ideas, values, a way of thinking, or a view about moral issues. Study of ethics involves a wide range of topics, including different philosophies, systems, ideas or principles. Ten major Ethicists, from different cultures and time periods, and their ethical theories are introduced in this paper followed by a discussion of their relevance with today's business.

Plato was one of the many philosophers known in history. He established the institution of most of western thinking in the areas of logic, philosophy, psychology, and politics. Plato's belif in abbsolutism can be viewed in modern society as vitures, which includes justice, piety and courage. Aristole, along with Plato is often considered to be one of the two most influential philosophers in Western thought. One of Aristotle's ethical thories was Eudaimonism. His ethical principle was to develop and maintain acitiviy in accordance with virtue and rational principle.

In addition to the beliefs of Plato and Aristole, many others had corresponding views on how the benefits of ethical actions should contributeto society. According toSt. Thomas Aquinas, a famous philospher of scholasticism, good ethics should promote good and avoid evil. Immanuel Kant, a German philosopher, generally regared as the last major philosopher of the early morden period. Theory of Deontology, developed by Kant, says that ethical principle should be developedin such a way that it will bringgoodness to society. Utilitaraianism, espoused by the nineteenth century philosophers Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill, holds that moral behavior produces the greatest good for the greatest number.

Mohandas Gandhi, one of the founding fathers of India, was a strong advocate of pacifism as a means of revolution. Pacifism is a commitment to achieve a goal in a non-violent or non-aggressive way. John Peters Humphrey, the principal drafter of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Throughout Humpherys life he promoted human rights in Canada and throughout the world.Martha Nussbaum, Professor of Law and Ethics, describes ethics as a duty that will serve the common public. Barbara Jordan, first African-American female to succeed in Texas politics. Jordan, describes ethical behavior as being honest, telling the truth, and doing what you said you were going to do.

The ethicists mentioned are few among the many that supports the belief that morals and ethics should play a role in today's rapid, growing, business world. The above ethical principals have little implication in today's business world since the mangers have different perspectives and approach for their individual and organizational goals. However, the business practices should be done in accordance with honesty, truthfulness and reliability. Despite, self-profit and high-level competition in the modern business industry, integrity and moral principles should be the foundation and basis above all. Many have their perspectives and standpoints on ethics however when time comes for decision making, compromises, and judgment calls, our moral codes and natural law of ethics should play a role, thus creating a serviceable outcome.
