In "The Fifth Child," the Lovatt family was so happy, and everything was perfect. All of that changed when the fifth child was conceived. Even before Ben was born, he was already a problem to the family. He was already considered abnormal.

When Harriet was pregnant with Ben, she was going through tremendous pains. Even though she experienced some discomfort with her other pregnancies, this was much more serious. She felt as though the baby was trying to kill her from the inside. She felt his strength as he was inside of her. This kept her up all night long. She was always sick and in a bad mood. Harriet even went as far as taking medications to try to subdue the pain. It seemed as though Ben, only a fetus, was already a grown baby.

Physically, Ben was much different from the other children. When the time came for Harriet to give birth to Ben, she even had to go to the hospital. With her previous four children, she gave birth in her bed at home. Ben came out not looking like a normal baby. He resembled more of a troll. He was small in height, even when he aged. He had a heavy-shouldered look. His hands were thick and heavy. Ben had a strange sloping head also. In the book, he was referred to a wrestler. Ben was doing things, at such a young age, that other children would not be doing.

Ben had abnormal emotional characteristics also. He always had a strange air about him. He had a mischievous expression. He had that "I don't care" attitude. Ben seemed to never be happy when he was at home or with the family. He went as far as killing the dog, and attempting to kill his siblings too. He would rip his own clothing off of his body. It seems as though he did not like to be constraint. At one point in the book, Ben tried to mimic the other childrens' behaviors. It seemed as though he was trying to please Harriet and David.

I believe that Ben's behavior is abnormal- if you compare him to the other children in the book- but only to a certain extent. However, you can not blame him for the way that he is. I think that his disability is based upon his genetic makeup. Ben's aunt gave birth to a child with a disability. Ben could be considered to have a disability also. This could be because of genetics.

After consulting with the Pope and St Bernard of Clairvaux she began to write her visions down, in the Scivas. Archbishop Heinrich, convinced Hildegard to share her visions and believed them to be a gift from God

The Outcome of pope eugenis' III commission

Pope Eugenis III sent a commission to investigate Hildegard's vision and obtain a copy of her writings. Pope Eugenis III read Hildegard's visions in front of the synod that all believed them to be true. The Pope sent Hildegard a letter of approval, authorizing her to continue transcribing her visions. The result of this was to ratify Hildegard's visionary gift.

Hildegard wasn't just restricted to religious life but she was also an abbess, mystic, poet, musician and scientist. She had a very hard and productive life. She become very well known and wrote many songs and books, many of which are still read today. She made a large contribution to society at her time overcoming whatever problems faced her.

Hildegard used a large variety of parables, metaphors, symbols, visionary imagery and non-verbal means to make her work reach out to many who are totally deaf to more standard approaches. She felt that everyone deserved the right to learn about her work, especially the visions she was receiving from God, even though they may have physical or mental disadvantages.

Abnormal psychology

Abnormal behavior is defined as behavior that is considered to be maladaptive or deviant by the social culture in which it occurs. Though disagreement exists regarding which particular behaviors can be classified as abnormal, psychologists have defined several criteria for purposes of classification. One is that the behavior occurs infrequently and thus deviates from statistical norms. Another is that the behavior deviates from social norms of acceptable behavior. A third is that the behavior is maladaptive, that it has adverse affects on the individual or on the individuals social group. Lastly, abnormality may be defined based on the subjective feelings of misery, depression, or anxiety of an individual rather than any behavior he exhibits.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition (DSM-IV), is a classification system of abnormal behaviors which aids psychologists and other mental health professionals in diagnosing and treating mental disorders. DSM-IV includes the major categories of abnormal behavior which are anxiety disorders, such as obsessive-compulsive disorders and phobias; affective disorders, which are disturbances of mood such as depression; schizophrenic disorders, which are characterized by major disturbances in personality and distortion of reality; and various personality disorders.

While psychologists use similar criteria to diagnose abnormal behavior, their perspectives in understanding and treating related disorders vary greatly. For instance, a psychologist with a psychoanalytic approach would explain depression as a reaction to loss, worsened by anger turned inward. A behavioral psychologist would assume a lack of positive reinforcement to be a significant cause in the disease. A cognitive theorist would focus on the negative thought patterns and attitudes of an individual in contributing to his depression. And a psychologist with a biological perspective would consider a chemical imbalance in the nervous system of a depressed individual to be responsible for his disorder. Many studies have shown that a number of these factors may come into play in the life of an individual suffering from a mental disorder characterized by abnormal behavior.

When reading Frye's article on oppression, it made me realize that oppression comes in different aspects of any person's life as much as a person's age, sex, race, sexual orientation, economic status, or anything that a person could be categorized under. Oppression is a form of discrimination. In this paper, I plan to show how many Frye's definition of oppression relates any general person.

I would like to relate Frye's definition to a guy named Joe, but first let me explain his situation. Joe was born to a black, single parent, lower class household along with two younger sisters. Joe didn't have a father figure in his life, so he was easily swayed to the consequences of the "street" life. Being in a lower class neighborhood caused Joe to go to a school that had low funding, therefore there were no programs to keep him off the streets. Joe's mother worked two jobs so she wasn't around enough to direct him. Under all of these oppressed circumstances in which Joe was a victim to, he joined a gang and began to sell drugs to have a sense of belonging in his society. Joe felt oppressed and confined to this behavior because his was a young, black, poor male with no other options.

Now let's examine Frye's definition of oppression. Joe was "confined" by the "forces and barriers" of being born to a black, single parent, lower class family. Joe had no "good choices" of what to do with himself since he didn't have any guidance at home and no after school activities due to his circumstances of his "forces and barriers". Therefore, he chose the "bad choices" that were set up by the society for their "benefit". Lastly, Joe felt that his ending factor was a condition that he was oppressed to membership of because of his race and gender.

I feel that with us focusing and comparing Joe's circumstances with Frye's definition of oppression should help us understand Joe's situation. Frye's definition pinpoints all of Joe's major downfalls. Like many young, black males, Joe was oppressed by society to make them think that gangs and drug dealing is the only way. In light of that, a person's standpoints in life can and will in most cases, oppress them into a bad or uncompromising situation.
