The Battles of Bull Run

Two battles in the U.S. Civil War were fought along Bull Run Creek near Manassas, in northern Virginia, southwest of Washington D.C. The first battle, often called "The Battle of 1st Manassas," occurred on July 1, 1861 between the Union army of about thirty thousand men controlled by the brave and strong General Irvin McDowell, and the Confederate of about twenty-two thousand commanded by General Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard. This battle was the first major battle of the Civil war, as well as for the junior officer, McDowell. A year later, the second battle was fought in the same place on August th and 0th. In that battle, General John Pope commanded thirty five thousand Union troops and faced the Confederate's General Robert E. Lee and his fifty thousand troops. Once again, the Union was outnumbered, but they fought long and hard. However, in the end, the Confederates came out the victors of both battles (Davis 56). After the second battle, Lee headed toward Maryland where the Battle of Antietam soon took place. Although the McDowell's South lost in the first battle along with the second one, He still was a vicious leader and fought hard.

McDowell led his army against Beauregard's army along Bull Run Creek. Both forces faced off and were well organized, but had their own strategies. McDowell's forces were organized into four divisions Tyler, Hunter, Heintzelman, and Miles. The Confederates, on the other hand, had no divisions and was led by thirteen independent brigades Bonham, Ewell, Jones, Longstreet, Cocke, Early, Holmes, Kershaw, Evans, Jackson, Bartow, Bee, Smith, and a cavalry brigade under Stuart. However, the Confederates were badly outnumbered, and eventually the weight of the disadvantages began to be felt. Tyler's division was attacked first from the left side and was separated from the three divisions. The others broke to the rear, heading toward the Henry House Hill, a hill where the soldiers could regroup in. The Federals were slow to follow and allowed the Southern brigade commanders to rally and form a line of battle on the reverse slope of Henry House Hill. There, General Thomas Jonathan Jackson held back the Union troops until nine thousand reinforcements led by General Joseph Eggleston Johnston arrived. The greatness of Jackson's defense strategy earned him the nickname "Stonewall". Because of him, the Confederate won the first battle of Bull Run (Bull Run ). The Union army losses included about three thousand men either killed, wounded, missing in action, or captured; the Confederate army lost about two thousand men. This victory encouraged the South and spurred the North to greater effort (Davis 57).

About a year later, the second Bull Run took place by the same area the first battle was fought on August th and 0th, 186. After failing to capture Richmond during the Peninsular Campaign, the North planned to unite the armies of General George Briton McClellan and General John Pope for an assault on the city. The Union was out- numbered but would soon be in for a surprise. Pope, with about thirty five thousand men, faced General Robert E. Lee who had about fifty thousand men. Pope was facing Lee from the South when all of a sudden, Stonewall Jackson, with twenty three thousand troops, attacked him from the east side. The Union troops turned around to be greeted by twenty three thousand men. The Union survived and fought for the first day, but on the second day they were driven away by the Confederate. This was another gruesome loss for the Union. Their loss was roughly fourteen thousand five hundred, and the Confederate was approximately nine thousand two hundred. This victory was huge for the Confederates because it cleared Virginia of Federal troops. Lee, then invaded Maryland, and this ended with the Battle of Antietam. The site of both Bull Run battles is shown in the Manassas National Park (Battle 1).

Write my Essay on Battle of Bull Run for me

In truth, if there was a reward for the most improved general, it would definitely go to General McDowell. A curious thing about McDowells enterprise at Bull Run is that one may fairly say that it was destined to failure, but yet conclude that he came within inches of success. He was forced to work with an army that was entirely out of shape and unfit for training. Yet, with all these disadvantages, McDowell did a good job with his men. In some ways McDowell did better than his critics have allowed. To move such an army at all, and get it concentrated. To throw a wing of seventeen thousand men over Bull Run, meant much hard work and hard driving. And yet, as we have seen, all this fell entirely short of what was needed for success. Rapidity of action was essential, and at no moment, at no point, did McDowell show any tendency of the giving up (Battle ). It is perhaps fair to say that McDowell had had no training or experience in the military and/or know anything about it. It was certainly not easy for a junior officer in a military service that gave neither practical nor theoretical training to its higher ranks, when suddenly promoted to the command of an army with such importance resting all on his shoulders (Bull Run ).

The Civil War all began with the battles at Bull Run. During the first Bull Run the confederate were victorious because of the heroics of Stonewall Jackson, and they also won in the second Bull Run battle also with his help. The Union were outnumbered every time they stood against the Confederate, but they fought hard. After the second battle of Bull Run Pope retreated northward and was finally joined by McClellan. Lee then invaded Maryland and the Battle of Antietam began. On the other hand, from not even knowing how to train a military to being the Union's commander, General McDowell accomplished the most out of every general. He taught and trained the confederate army very well. The two Battles of Bull Run will always be remembered for the beginning of the American Civil War (Battle 1-).

When evaluating art what does one use as criteria for the exhibit?Currently Washington State University's Fine Arts Museum is taking part in The Native American Fine Arts Invitational. They are hosting an exhibit titled "Art in Two Worlds."This exhibit is "celebrating the creativity and innovation of Native American artists." (Exhibition Description Online)The artwork enables its audience to "gain insight and expand their understanding of Native American Fine Art."(Deloris Tarzan Ament, April , 18, F.4) Through different cultures, viewpoints, and various backgrounds, "Art in Two Worlds" does an amazing job of displaying diversity and Native American Heritage.

With a wide array of colors, shapes, and designs, the artwork in the museum represents a plethora of individuality. One could interpret this piece in numerous different ways, depending on their personal perspective. The exhibit "Poonka Timertik Inua", also known as the "Punk Walrus Spirit", designed by Larry Beck, portrays a vision that the artist saw while in a junkyard years ago.Larry Beck graduated from the University of Washington with a Master of Fine Arts Degree. He tells us that he was in Skagit Valley at a junkyard looking for parts to his Toyota when he saw an Eskimo mask made out of aluminum mirrored in the side of a car.He then began making masks because they were interesting to him. There was something about them that intrigued him. While he did not specify what that something was, perhaps the unlimited potential of diversity in facial expressions captured his interest. He knew, however, that he no longer wanted to create traditional, figurative art."Contemporary art no longer interested me.It seemed spiritually empty."(Quoted by Larry Beck) Encountering this mask, Beck came up with the idea to use only objects from the environment for his next masterpiece. He had auto parts, dental mirrors, and feathers in his studio back home, so between the parts that he already had and what he had just found, he created this wonderful work of art.If you can imagine, he used half of an automobile tire, auto parts, dental mirrors, paint, old handles, and a lot of creativity to craft what he calls the "Poonka Timertik Inua", basically a really unique looking walrus.

This piece completely deviates from traditional Native American art. In contrast to typical spirited subjects, the viewer of this work perceives a cartoon-like expression based upon the use of largely unusual three-dimensional objects. This piece is unique in that it shows a great deal of diversity and definitely comes from a different background. Most of the pieces in the museum have bright colors, tell a story, and have that so-called "Native American look."While traditional Native American art is so recognizable, there is no one particular look to this genre. It all has such a unique style, comes from a different culture, and displays a distinct sense of diversity.Native American artists reflect on their "heritage to produce works with seductive line and a sense of combustion that is at once passionate and contained."Contemporary Native American artists are beginning to express old visions in new forms."It is not so much that they are breaking tradition as they are evolving tradition into new forms." (Deloris Tarzan Ament, April , 18, F.1)Contemporary artists display their artwork for the world, not just their tribes.Larry Beck is one of these artists. Becks' piece of work is not on a normal canvas slate and does not portray a particular scene in ones' life, like some others do.Rather his artwork displays immense originality and imagination. The only colors in his design are red, black, and white. It does not have a normal shape to it.After all, the basic design that the piece holds is that of half of an automobile tire.Beck had "broadened the horizons of what's possible for all native artists." (Deloris Tarzan Ament, April , 18, F.4)He has successfully mingled traditional Native American ideas with contemporary artwork while maintaining his Eskimo heritage.

"Art in Two Worlds" is currently exhibited in hopes of redefining long-established ideas of Native American artwork. The "two worlds" that the title is referring to are that of "acceptable Indian art" and that of the artwork that does not coincide with what is considered "acceptable".Reflecting the reality of our world, the main point that this exhibit is trying to get across is that artwork, like human beings, can be found in many different shapes, colors, styles, and forms. It does not always have to conform to the norm. All of the art displayed in the exhibit is there for a reason.Beck's work in particular is a unique presentation of his Eskimo heritage. He includes the word "Inua" in most of his pieces because it is Eskimo for spirit. He says that he's "learned that visually, things work out if he has that spirit in there."(Deloris Tarzan Ament, April , 18, F.1)

Most of the artwork shown in Washington State University's Fine Arts Museum is very eccentric and arguable. One may think that a certain piece is depicting something; while at the same time someone else may think that the same piece is telling a story or showing how the artist feels about a subject. The themes of the art pieces are all very different. There is the traditional artwork that everyone understands and the alternative pieces that take an imagination to comprehend.Perspectives differ, whether we are evaluating art, interacting with others, or creating the masterpiece of our own life.Through our many different cultures, viewpoints, and backgrounds, "Art in Two Worlds" creates an environment where one can go to become more aware not only of Native American Heritage, but also the vast diversity throughout our world. It exposes us to, and offers us the opportunity to reflect on the ethnic, cultural, and expressive diversity of our society.

ENGLISH ESSAY FORM IV

The Catcher in the Rye

"Holden's problem is not himself but other people". Discuss with close reference to the novel.

Holden's problem is exposed, aggravated and made worse by other people's influences and misunderstandings. Holden, in general, is a misunderstood teenage boy. The most defining point in his life has been the death of his younger brother Allie, and he has never quite recovered from this event. In turn taking away his motivation leading to his cynical attitude towards society and the people outside his family. He becomes jealous of other boys his age who he assumes have never had to go through what he has had to. These combined factors lead to his profound insecurity within himself and his sentimental feelings towards his happier past, shown in his reminiscence of the museum during his childhood. Holden's problem is a mixture of his own character flaws and those of his society to boys of his age in the 140s era.

Holden Caulfield has been exposed to a very tough environment that other seventeen-year-olds could never imagine. Allie's death took away Holden's faith in his own life. However rather than this motivating him, it gradually led to his depression. Allie played a major role in Holden's character even after death, in being one of the few people he could turn to. Towards the end of the novel when Holden is at his most fragile, emotionally, he talks to Allie to help him through. "…I'd make believe I was talking to my brother Allie. I'd say to him, 'Allie, don't let me disappear. Allie, don't let me disappear. Allie, don't let me disappear. Please, Allie.' And then…I'd thank him."

The distinct cynical attitude of Holden's is formed when he is made an outcast at school, although this is only by isolating himself subconsciously. Jealousy becomes one of his major character flaws, " everybody sticks together in these dirty little goddam cliques. The guys that are on the basketball team stick together…Even the buys that belong to the goddam Book-of the-month Club stick together." Holden is continually labeling people as "phonies". He feels that people who do something under false intentions are phonies, later he digresses to call anyone remotely agitating to him a phony. Holden visits a New York night club to listen to a renowned piano player called Ernie, " everybody was clapping their heads off, old Ernie turned around on his stool and gave this very phony, humble bow. Like as if he was a helluva humble guy, besides being a terrific piano player. It was all very phony…" He tells the psychoanalyst that he becomes depressed when he sees someone fake a smile to a person they do not even like. A major fact about phonies that Holden fails to accept is that everybody, at some point, acts phony. It is a part of human nature and he is no exception, as demonstrated in the scene on the train where Holden feeds Mrs. Morrow lies about her son being a completely different, kind person as to what he really is.

Holden rejects his own society because his own society has rejected him. It is clear to see that he has not been accepted among his peer group. He is not a member of the book of the month club, nor the basketball team, and if he ever had been, he would currently be in a different mindset than the one he is in. Even after Holden has flunked out of Pencey he still accepts to write an English composition for his room mate, Stradlater. This is because there is still a part of him that wants to show that he can still do some things well, if he can be bothered to. He knows he can write well he longs to be accepted even if he is leaving later that week.

Jealousy of other boys increases his depression, because they all take what they have for granted, he is angry at how his life has developed for him and how easy their life has been. Without realising how much he has for himself, if only he sat back to enjoy being seventeen, he tends to have a contradicting character of being over analytical and ignorant at the same time. He is unhappy with his current state and when given the opportunity to meet a friend of his, Jane Gallagher whom he met a few years back he chooses not to. Primarily because he has a fear of rejection, he does not want to disappoint Jane's recollection of Holden nor does he want to damage the memory he holds of her. This highlights a strong case of insecurity.

With no real enjoyment coming from the people around him he begins to form a sentimental side of his past. He visits the museum from his childhood to reflect on his happier days. He wishes that his life back then never changed, "You ought to be able to stick them in one of those big glass cases, and just leave them alone". This episode shows how underneath Holden's superficial, cynical character, he does appreciate the things that please him. Here Salinger explores the concept of time. People change, circumstances change and our values and attitudes alter. Holden's feelings of discontent are evident as he longs for happier times to remain permanent, rather like museum displays. However he acknowledges that even if that could occur, one cannot stop the change in oneself. Salinger explores the ideas of an individual coming to terms with himself and his world.

Holden has, without doubt, a large problem with depression. It is clear that his own character traits have influenced how large this problem has become. However the determining factor in his mental breakdown has been the society in which Holden is based. Holden's lack of acceptance into any peer groups has been the reason he has "flunked" out of three high schools. The way his personality is unpredictable, deems it misunderstood to many people, as shown in the incident when Holden gets the idea to run away forever with a pretty girl called Sally Hayes. His insecurity, maturity and quest for sincerity cloud his thoughts and make him a pessimistic and cynical person leading to more inacceptance and deeper depression. The bottom line being that Holden's problem is a near spot on equal mixture ofhis own personal flaws and those of his society.

Through out history there have been many significant people that have contributed in making Canada an equally diverse country. Agnes Macphail was one individual who played a major role in shaping our society into what it is today.

Before Agnes Macphail's accomplishments in the Canadian government she went through several years preparing for an independent future. Years of education and training were her ingredients to success. At the age fourteen Agnes had passed her high school entrance exam with very little difficulty. In her years of high school she discovered her talent in winning debates by joining the literacy club. She was ahead of the class and by the age 18 she was accepted into Normal school to train to be a teacher. Graduating from Normal School at the age 1 Agnes found herself walking into her first classroom of students at Gowanlocks.Agnes had a great ability to communicate with her students and very quickly her communication ability was known within the community. She was a very popular teacher. In her second year of teaching she went on to a different school in Kinloss. She lodged with Mr. and Mrs. Sam Braden who owned two stores. When people would come to purchase groceries they would talk about the high tariffs. Agnes began to listen and then join in, these were her first political discussions. At the end of her second year of teaching Agnes was told she had inward goiter.Regardless of the setback she still wanted to pursue her goals. When her health began to improve Agnes moved to Alberta to live with her Aunt and Uncle and find a part time job to make somewhat of a living.Agnes began teaching again. She sent a letter into the Farmers Sun about the farmers' situation of "high tariffs" not expecting a reply. Agnes not only got a reply but also was asked to join a political organization called the United Farmers of Ontario. Her first speech was 10 minutes long. Those who listened were astonished to see a woman speak with such intelligence. It was obvious to the UFO that she knew a great deal of the farmers' situations.Agnes was attending meetings in the evening and teaching in the day.Macphail eventually stopped teaching. Newspapers were soon recognizing Agnes Macphail as the woman who spoke so well.A group of people put Agnes's name forward as a nominee for their South-East Grey constituency in the federal election.Agnes was elected out of the eleven, which was a great shock considering she was the only woman nominated.Agnes was to stand as the UFO Ontario candidate in the next federal election.Macphail gave her speech at Ontario and won 40 seats.

When Agnes Macphail stood tall with confidence giving her speeches on behalf of the UFO she knew one day she would move onto something more challenging. What was thought to be impossible she proved to the contrary in 11 by taking a seat in the House of Commons. Her outlook on what needed to be done grew and what she fought for developed into a more serious level of thoughts and decisions. After the election Agnes worked with the government committee on the Old Age Pensions Bill, which was an adequate way to start off her career.Shortly after visiting a jail Agnes realized the atrocious conditions inmates dealt with. When she first brought up her concern of the condition of the prisons she was laughed at and told a prison was no place for a woman to make judgment.Agnes fired back and asked which one of them were willing to take care of the situation, no one took her up on the offer leaving Agnes to continue her research and visits to the prisons. In 15 Agnes Macphail introduced a resolution in the House of Commons to provide work for prison inmates and that any proceeds they made went towards their dependant or to be saved up until their release. There were no objections and eventually her resolution was put in place.Agnes always believed strongly on women's rights. She never gave up on women's equality by suggesting that even wives with families should have the option to work.Though her suggestions where not all dealt with right away, she did contribute to the decisions made on behalf of equality for women in the long run. Her objectives of helping out with tariffs were her primary concern.Macphail spoke clearly of her views on the tariffs as she did with any of her concerns. She managed to do so regardless of constant intimidation from newspapers, and arrogant men whom were against everything she represented

After 1 years of being in the House of Commons (15 of those years she was the only woman) she was not re-elected.Agnes Macphail refused to renounce. In 14 Agnes Macphail ran for CCF and then was re-elected in 148.After her government years she tried her best to make a difference.Even though Agnes was not sitting in Ottawa, the Ontario Legislation was still a political party, which she was elected into. Her downfall was a fall but she managed to land on her feet.In 151 Macphail was responsible for the first equal pay legislation which was a huge accomplishment for the CCF.She never stopped working on helping with equality with women because she was very aware of the hardships of being a woman during that time. She inspired the founding of the Elizabeth Fry Society of Toronto.Agnes was also an active participant in the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom.Different Women groups looked up to Agnes and she was frequently asked to speak on behalf of them.In 154 the year Agnes passed away she was being considered for an appointment to the Canadian Senate which is an opportunity to be extremely proud of. Agnes Macphail had many ideas about how pensions for health care should have be taken care of. Though she spoke of Health care, not many people heard her.In 154 Leslie Frost heard her ideas about health care and all resolutions were granted.Even when she passed away her words were making a difference.
