"Orbiting" by Bharati Mukherjee is the perfect example of a story which brightly shows a cultural conflict and barriers. Written by an Indian author it embodies both views from insight and outsight on cultural differences between American and Asian cultures. In this story cultural barriers prevent the narrator's family from seeing who this new narrator's boyfriend really is. The family does not understand and want to accept the differences of another culture.

The narrator Renata is an Italian-American and her boyfriend Ro is Afghani. She invites him and her family for the Thanksgiving dinner. From the very first moment of the Ro's meeting with Renata's family the reader sees that the family doesn't like Ro. For example the mother says "Now she's messing with a Southerner?" (47) When Ro greets the parents, the father is shocked "Dad moves closer to Ro but doesn't hold out his hand. I can almost read his mind he speaks" (47).

Two men, the father and the boyfriend, are completely different because of their cultural customs, interests, and beliefs. The father suggests drinking scotch and Ro refuses to drink. He explains that Muslim "…do not imbibe alcoholic spirits…."The father doesn't understand it at all. "In my father's world, grown men bowl in leagues and drink the best whiskey they can afford" (480). Father's disappointment grows when he finds out that Ro can't participate in the spot discussion because he is not into this sport. The narrator says "Ro loves squash…skied in St. Moritz… knows where to buy Havana cigars without getting hijacked. He's sophisticated, he could make monkeys out of us all, but they think he's retard" (48).

They consider Ro "retard". However, their own knowledge and understanding of the world are not that great. For example, "Brent may actually have an idea where Afghanistan is, in a general way, but Dad is lost" (48).Even though Brent has "an idea" about Afghanistan the idea is not what it really is. "He thought only Americans had informed political opinionother people staged coups out of spite and misery. It's an unwelcome revelation to him that … Ro would die for things that he, Brent, have never heard of…" (48).

At the end of the story Renata's love and admiration overcome her family's disapproval. She says "…I love this man…In spite of the funny way he holds himself…Ro is Clint Eastwood, scarred hero and survivor. Dad and Brent are children" (484).

Most of my summer holidays ended up boring and wasteful. My usual procedure during the days without school is going to bed after midnight and waking up in the afternoon. I always hoped for an exciting and interesting summer holiday until last year, when my hope was successfully attained after I've gone to my first hiking expedition.

The reason I went on the hiking trip was because it is a requirement for the Duke of Edinburgh award.I didn't want to participate on the hike at first, but with persuasion from my brother, I finally agreed to take this valuable opportunity. The requirement of this award is to hike for at least 0 kilometers over two days and one night.I went on the hike with a group of teenagers who every one of us had never met before. At the end of the trip, we became great friends.

I had to admit I was extremely regretful during the first few hours of the expedition.I thought I should have spent my summer holiday comfortably instead of coming out in the steam.Hiking is definitely arduous, since I had to carry more than twenty pounds of personal effects, plus walking on muddy trails. But, it was definitely challenging and thrilling, which I hoped for.I remember during the hike, one of the hikers got tired and wanted to return home.Unfortunately, we were in the middle of the forest, where no cell phones or cars could be reached.Using the shortest interval of time as possible, since it was getting dark, each one of us gave courage and comfort to the dismayed hiker.Amazingly, she recovered at prompt and continued on the hike. After that, we worked very well as a group.By helping each other, we quickly arrived at our campsite.

Write my Essay on Summer Holidays cheap

Once we arrived on the campsite, the first action we took wasn't to rest.Rather, we built cooking shelters and set up our tents. These actions are essential to take before sunset.Afterwards, we split into two groups. One group had to prepare the night's dinner and the other was in charge to filter water that had been taken from the nearby lake.We worked extremely well together since everyone cooperated. This was the ultimate challenge of the entire award.Obviously, we were successful. Not only we had a wonderful dinner, and also, we had clean water to drink.

After this hiking expedition, I have arranged a couple of backpacking trips with my friends during the long summer holiday.Hiking is definitely worth going to because it is not only fun and interesting, also, I can learn how to work with others.Sometimes, I can even test my leadership skills. When I head back to school, I will never have the time to go on hikes until the next summer holiday.

The Jungle is Neutral.

Order College Papers on The Jungle is nuetral

The jungle is neutral, so why do we hurt it?Throughout the ages the jungle has been left untouched. It was harsh and inaccessible due to its remote locations and almost unbearable heat and insects. It was a thing of mystery, where humans were unwelcome.

As the twentieth century arrived though, humans started to take interest in the rare and extremely diverse biome. The jungle which can be found in 50 different countries, on five continents and which makes up approximately 8. percent of the earths surface is under attack (McKnight and Hess, p. ).Not only do biologists think the jungle houses up to half of the world's species, the jungle is also a key recycler of the green house gas carbon monoxide.

Humans have exploited the jungles of the world at an alarming pace. Some 51 acres a minute; 74,000 acres per day; 7 million acres per year are destroyed (McKnight and Hess, p. ).More then half of the original African rain forest is now gone, about 45 percent of Asia's rain forest no longer exists, and the proportion in Latin America is approaching 40 percent (McKnight and Hess, p. ).The rate of deforestation is highest in Asia due to commercial timber exploitation, but West Africa is not far behind with 0 percent of Nigeria's forests cleared and 8o percent of Ghana's (McKnight and Hess, p. ).

There is no disputing the fact that the resources from the jungles of the world have led to a better quality of human life. But these are only short term gains for the countries.Once the land is clear sure there is a short nutrient boost that lasts for about - years, but then what? The fields stop producing; grassy pastures that were used for grazing are taken over by weeds.Mass erosion starts and never seems to stop.In the end all you are left with is dirt, barren dirt and rocks.Where are all the gains? They stopped long ago. That is not even the worst part; think about what else we lose? The pharmaceutical products and new food crops, even natural insecticides that we have yet to discover.

All may not be lost though.Bit by bit the countries of the world are trying to cope.Agroforestry, the planting of crops with trees instead of cutting them down is being developed in many areas. Also countries such as Brazil are setting aside tropical rainforest land as reserves, so that it is not strip cleared and laid to waste. Will it be enough, only time will tell?

Throughout history, people have committed all types of sins.Whether they are major or minor, people have been punished for them.In Nathaniel Hawthorne's, The Scarlet Letter, Hester Prynne is punished for her sin of adultery. She is sentenced to three hours on the scaffold and a lifetime of wearing an embroidered "A" on her chest. In today's day Hester's punishment may seem a little harsh. These days when a man or woman commit adultery it isn't considered as bad as people saw it to be in the 1800's.People aren't punished as severely as Hester was in The Scarlet Letter.

An adulterer these day's, would not have to deal with the embarrassment of living their life wearing an "A" on their chest at all times. In these times, if a person commits adultery, they don't really get punished. Sometimes, if the person's significant other finds out and decides to divorce them, they can use it against the adulterer in court. The adulterer's significant other can get out of paying any money.

The people in The Scarlet Letter are said to be Puritans. They seem to believe that sin permeates our world. The settlers immediately set up a prison and a cemetery. They know that crime and death are unavoidable.Puritans believe that sin not only encompasses our world but that it should be seeked out and uncovered, so the person can be punished. This unmasking of sin is supposed to help the sinner and show an example for others, but it does more than that.Hester's public punishment makes her an outcast. It gives the townspeople reason to mock her.But Hester is strong and accepts her fate. The woman of the town criticize her for the embroidering the "A" with such detail and precision. They think she is proud and trying to show off. That is not the reality.Hester accepts what is currently her situation and deals with it.

Everyone has violated either moral or religious law at least once in their lifetime. Some walk around stealthy with this heavy burden of sin in their hearts, while others get humiliated publicly because their sin is discovered.Although Hester's mistake was driven by innocent love, the Puritans took it seriously. The Puritans didn't look at Hester's sin as an act of love but instead as the work of the devil.Through the eyes of the Puritans, she is an extreme sinner, because she has gone against the Puritans ways and committed adultery. The scarlet "A" makes her stronger and more of an individual.Hester behaves with decorum and grace, helping others who are hungry, sick, or in need.Hester fully acknowledged her guilt and displayed it with pride.

Reality TV?

It seems that lately whenever I sit down at night and turn on the television there is a common trend among many of the channels. As I begin to flip trough them, the majority of what I see is this so called reality TV.Sometimes there is a group of people living together in a house and seeing who will annoy the others to the point where they can no longer take it.Others have a man dating 11 women and then getting to take his pick of whichever one he wants. One other one I like is when contestants are trying to eat more cockroaches than their opponents do in a minute.Who's "reality" is that? I sure don't know anybody who lives their lives doing these kind of ridiculous things. Nothing in reality TV is actually based upon "reality" except maybe that there are real people in them. They portray a false image to their audience by making them believe that this "reality" is actually common in many people's lives. Its just taking an opportunity to show people at their worst, finding new and innovative ways of degrading them.

Having, "real people," in the shows is one of the main reasons that people are drawn to watching reality TV.By "real people," I mean people that the average American can relate to. The viewers are led to thinking, "Oh my gosh, can you believe he or she did that? I would never do that!"It is the idea that we could if we wanted to, take part, which has its appeal for many, sometimes even subconsciously. People are always curious about other people and they think that this is a great opportunity to look into others' lives. It is just instinct, the same kind that makes us want to look at an accident. But the "real people" that are supposedly in the TV shows are normally not the kind of person that the viewer actually can relate to.The producers of the shows seem to make sure they take the most ignorant, unique, and crazy people they can find.I was even watching one show where one of the contestants said, "This is crazy, everyone in this house has problems, we were all neglected as children and haven't grown up in to normal human beings."

Some reality shows have started to push that slim line of even being able to have the word "reality" in their name. Some shows such as Fear Factor and Dog Eat Dog, are commonly referred to as reality TV.The only thing that they remind me of is a game show, and I don't know why they wouldn't just be classified as one.Really, that is what all of these shows could be called. They all have the same concept of a game show.Sometimes there are groups that are divided into different teams and they try to beat each other at games. There are always contestants competing against each other to achieve the ultimate goal. This goal can vary anywhere from a large sum of money, to a wife or husband.

Please note that this sample paper on Real TV is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes.
