What do the numbers 18 and 1 have in common? For people in the United States, these numbers signify important ages, ages in which people are considered adults. For Americans, 18 and 1 are the ages in which a person is given more responsibility. The idea is also unique to Japanese culture. However, they recognize age 0 rather than 18 or 1.For the Japanese, this age is important as a turning point in which people are considered adults. They are given the rights to vote, entitled to marriage without parental consent, and they are able to buy alcohol and cigarettes.

Since 148, the second Monday of January has become a national holiday, celebrating young people who have entered adulthood to become self-reliant members of society. The Japanese recognize a young persons entrance into adulthood as an important matter; therefore they host Seijin shiki, The Coming of Age Ceremony.

This tradition actually dates back many centuries. In the ninth century, during the Seiwa era, it began as a ceremony to honor young boys who were approaching adulthood called Genbuku. The boys received collars and headdresses that required them to cut and arrange their hair accordingly.During 16th centuries, young girls between 1 to 16 finally gained the right to participate this ceremony and recognized as young adults as well.

To attend this ceremony, men wear business suits or dark colored kimonos, while women celebrate the day by donning furisode kimono¡Xa special type of kimono for unmarried women with extra-long sleeves and elaborate designs. Most young women cannot put on a kimono themselves, so they go to a kimono kitsuke who dresses them. They also go to a hair stylist, have their hair set the day before or early in the morning.A Japanese kimono can cost as much as a new car, therefore most women choose to rent instead of buying it.For unmarried women, furisode is about the most formal thing they could wear; therefore they choose to wear it to represent the significance of this event.

Now, the ceremonies are mostly organized by local governments, sometimes by schools, companies, and public organizations. They are generally held in the morning and all of the young adults maintaining residency in the area are invited to attend. Some ceremonies will start with traditional festival or archery contest. To formally begin, government officials give speeches, and small presents are handed out to the new adults.Depending on the sponsor, many events also have well-known guest speakers, parties, or other activities.

After the ceremony, these young people visit temples and shrines or step out on the town with their friends. They reunite old friends from elementary school, junior high and high schools. Also, they meet up with friends from their hometown that they haven't seen for long time.To start their adult experience, they are likely to go out for drinks and host parties to celebrate.

In conclusion, the Japanese Coming-of-Age Ceremony not only represents traditional culture, but also symbolizes respect, maturity as well as receiving full acceptance and recognition from society. As an ethnicity who emphasizes on respect and manner, Japanese educate young adults the importance of being responsible to others and self through this event.

In the late 1700s, feudalism in Japan was declining.Tokugawa was breaking down and many people in Japan were having problems especially with the shogun.Japan's economy was declining. Many merchants detested the fact that they are at the bottom of the social class. There was a declination of the samurais and economic problems with daimyos.

The population in Japan was increasing to a great extent and many merchants were becoming richer. They were involved with trades and making a lot of money from it because the ruling classes did not want to deal with it.The higher classes such as the daimyo and the samurai classes were declining economically. The daimyos had to pay for their families' expenses because the shogun kept them and fed them.Taxes were very little from agricultural taxes. Also, the daimyos and the samurais were enjoying luxurious lives in the cities that it made them poor.Daimyos had to cut samurais' salaries. Therefore, they borrowed money from the merchants. The merchants charged them interest every time they borrow money. This lowered the statuses of the daimyos and samurais, having to borrow money from the lowest social class. Controlling the daimyos and the samurais, the merchants felt hatred towards the shogun for putting them on the bottom of the social system. They want to get rid of the Tokugawa and will rebel with whoever is against the Tokugawa.

There were many crop failures and taxes were increasing with the peasants in Japan. The price of lots of crops went up such as rice. The price of land was going up.The peasants were forced to work harder because Tokugawa demands more money from the daimyos and therefore, the daimyos demand more money from the peasants. There were many improvements in agriculture such as producing better seeds and tools. This leaded to more enhanced crops such as cotton and tobacco. Many farmers found that the new crops make more money, so many farmers quit growing food."The root cause of this situation seems to have been a growing imbalance in the distribution of rural wealth" (East Asia by Fairbank). Some farmers were becoming richer while other farmers were becoming poorer. In the end, there was not enough food to serve the big population of Japan.

Many people in Japan were discontent with Tokugawa. The Tokugawa were so involved with spending money on themselves that they made most of the population suffer. While they realized that the samurais were rebelling, they brought in Confucianism. This resulted a major decline of feudalism in Japan. Many people believed that they should be loyal to the emperor and the not the shogun."All land was to come under the direct rule of the emperor" (East Meets West by Alberto Morales). Also, many people in Japan wanted the feudal classes to be abolished.

For a long time, Japan was very peaceful with no wars or rebellions. In the late 1700s, many problems were approaching Japan.Feudalism was declining especially with the feudal classes and feudal land."The abolition of…autocratic feudal provinces were a necessary step to the unification of the country under a strong central government, without which we would not have been able to offer a united front to the outside forces.." (Memories of a Meiji leader, East Meets West by Alberto Morales).I agree with this, abolishing feudalism in Japan is a very wise idea.In some ways, this is one of the reasons why Japan was very successful in revolution compared to China.

I'm sure all of us wish we were writers some time or another. We all write but for a passionate few can call it their life. Two authors that have given some enlightenment into a writers mind are George Orwell and Joan Didion in their essays Why I Write. Yes, both essays have the same name, althoughDidion did take the title from Orwell (self confessed in the first line). Lets face it folks the original is always better than the sequel. What a tough subject to grab, talking about oneself and the motivation behind. Both authors did so in a different but in an essentially honest manner. Each author displays different word games and the importance of word placement verses meaning. Imagery and personal memories are strung throughout both essays. It was easier to find yourself almost lost Orwell's work, but I will give credit where credit is due and these writers substantial amount of it.

Diddion's approach to the topic seemed to be more how not why I write. She explains methods of writing, things she enjoys in word play, how are images become words. There is also some insight into her past, memories of youth and her coming to terms with her ideas. She talks of days at Berkly and describing long bus rides down the west coast in vivid imagery in almost an attempt to justify her style of writing. It is shown how she starts a novel; Joan starts with just an image, answers all the questions like "who is this?" "why are they here?" ,and let the story devolpe from there. Even if it isn't the beginning of your story it is a start. So getting into the story, writers wait for the story to unfold just as much or more so than the reader. She did answer her thesis in the last statement "…Who was Victor? Who was the narrator? …Let me tell you one thing about why writers write had I known the answer to any of these questions I would never needed to write a novel." A very effective ending for her essay, giving the reader hope in becoming a writer themselves one day.

Orwell had a very different approach in tackling the subject. It seems to be an autobiographical rant about his life in writing. George was destine to write. Writing poems as a small child, rhyming plays at fourteen, novels in his twenties, Orwell has been writing his whole life. In this essay he also explains time period the politics around it and how it effected his writing. Giving us a view into his mind, why he wrote. Still in his essay he gets technical presenting four reasons any one writes "sheer egoism…aesthetic enthusiasm…historical impulse…political purpose." People write to change the view of, to make think, or to effect the reader. The most obvious view of Orwell is the animosity towards a sense of humanity. It easy to relate to because it seems that person wrote every word in their own style. Giving examples of writing through the whole writing career (starting at age four). Orwell has done an exemplary job in proposing why he writes.

Writing, in any form, is an excellent way of expression. Some writers are stupendous (Orwell), and some are just good writers (Diddion), and some of us will keep trying (Me). All in all everyone wants to write sometime (even the illiterate). It is a shame not all of us were born to write (there would be to many books) because the power of expression is an idea we all need. I would like to end with a movie quote from Throw Mama from the Train " a writer writes always."

I consider myself an adult learner. When I graduated from high school I did not attend college right away.At the time I was not ready for college but regretted not attending.I felt that time was running out.Instead, I started working full-time as an Administrative Assistant for a financial advisor.Thinking back I'm glad that I didn't go to college straight out of high school because my mind wasn't where it's at now.I am more mature and ambitious.I enjoy learning and know that it will improve my life.

The other day I interviewed my classmate Felicia and have found that she's also an adult learner. Felicia is a full-time student at Hartford College for Women and like many adult learners she's faced with having to manage family, work and school. She is majoring in Legal Studies and is considering going to law school. She enjoys law and knows that it will benefit her in her career path. She is pursuing her education because it will help her climb the corporate ladder.Felicia currently works at Mass Mutual in the annuity department.Eventually, she wants to work as a paralegal at Mass Mutual. She knows what she wants and is going for it.

In the coming of age novel All the Pretty Horses Cormac McCarthy follows a young John Grady Cole on a journey of sorrow and triumph. He includes two funerals, one at the beginning of the novel and on at the end, to depict John Gradys evolution from a boy to a man.

In the first part of the novel McCarthy includes the setting of John Gradys grandfathers funeral to portray society and John Gradys inability to cope with death.Imagery is used to describe the funeral and the reaction of society. The vivid description of the bits of snow in the air and the blowing dust embodies the desolate emotions felt by the assemblage (4).They are so lost in their emotions that the preachers words [are] lost in the wind (4).McCarthy includes these descriptions to imply the sorrow and emptiness they feel after losing a loved one. However, their grief is contradicted by John Gradys reaction to his grandfathers death.Throughout the funeral John Grady observes others, but never expresses his true feelings towards death.McCarthys quick transition from the funeral to the evening exemplifies John Gradys willingness to forget the event by focusing on his horse instead of his sentiments towards his grandfathers death. This is the first time the reader learns that John Grady has trouble confronting his problems and would rather run from them.

At the end of the novel McCarthy includes the funeral of Abuela, the woman who raised and nutured John Grady Cole, to reveal his development since the beginning of the novel.A detailed description of the funeral demonstrates the differences between the Mexican and American society. The attendees wept and ...wailed while helping each other along [the path] (00).In this scene the funeral attendants outwardly express emotion, where as at the first funeral the attendees did not. This implies that in the Mexican culture emotions are more outwardly expressed than in the American culture. This also can suggest John Gradys transformation from an apathetic observer to an emotional participant in life. After the funeral, John Grady walks to Abuelas gravesite to say goodbye.By confronting her grave, he has learned to cope with death and confront his problems as well. This is the only time in the novel that John Grady cries and is used to assert his new found maturity and self-confidence. By being able to confront death and express emotion he has overcome one of the many obstacles of maturing.

McCarthy uses both funerals to portray John Gradys development into a mature young man.At the first funeral John Gray sees his father observing the funeral from afar and at the second he observes Abuelas funeral. This implies that he has matured into a man much like his father and even though he is not a part of the funeral still respects and mourns for the dead.By using cold and windy to describe both funerals McCarthy implies that death is universal and must be dealt with at one time or another.By confronting Abuelas death John Grady is, in a way, confronting his grandfathers death as well.He can look back upon his life and finally express the emotions he was to afraid to reveal through Abuelas death.

Corporate Responsibility

Building a company that does the right thing might not be cheap or easy, but organizations that have such a foundation can avoid crises and show real returns.Corporate social responsibility has become the business issue of the 1st century. In the wake of government cutbacks on spending, businesses have been pressured to play a larger role in ensuring that they make the ethical and prudent decision.

Definition

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is the overall relationship of the corporation with all of its stakeholders customers, employees, communities, owners/investors, suppliers and competitors. Elements of social responsibility include investment in community programs, employee relations, creation and maintenance of employment, and financial performance. It appears that different organizations have framed different definitions, although there is considerable common ground between them. To simplify this definition, CSR is about how companies manage the business processes to produce an overall positive impact on society.

Role

Do the managers of public corporations have the option of managing them in the public interest? It is apparent that society has deemed our corporations to act ethical. These corporations' objectives must reach beyond seeking profits but also developing moral minimum standards of behavior. No longer is it acceptable for corporations to have only one agenda, to increase profits so long as it stays within the rules of the game. The rules have changed; the golden rule of engaging in open and free competition without deception or fraud is now just a small aspect of how corporations interact with the public.

Self Interest

Was New York State Electric and Gas (NYSEG) Project Share program altruistic, or were they acting with their own self-interest in mind? Thomas Hobbes's indicates, "…A person will realize that she or he has no moral obligations than those obligations that she or he assumes and are only acting on those obligations in self-interest…." NYSEG had the opportunity to act like their competitors and simply shut off the power and write it off as bad debit. This would not necessary be in NYSEG best self-interest.NYSEG had a duty to solve a social problem and treating one's customer's well is a means to maximizing shareholder wealth. This program had a direct impact on NYSEG's bottom line, when compared to the average U.S. utility company; NYSEG's bad debt is 0 percent lower. The company clearly indicated that some of the money spent for the corporate responsibility program was recovered. The retained customers were able to pay their bills through the Project Share program. It would appear that NYSEG's self-interest meet the criteria for social responsibility to solve a social problem and at the same time, their program helped increase shareholders wealth. In this case, Hobbes's assumption about self-interest is clearly prevalent.

In conclusion, business has become, in the last half century, the most powerful institution on the planet. The dominant institution in any society needs to take responsibility. Every decision that is made, every action that is taken, must be viewed with skepticism. There is a very gray line between self-interest and what is altruistic.

Is Jimmy Blacksmith Evil!

Jimmy Blacksmith was not evil, he was somebody driven to the unthinkable because he had all this anger and frustration bottled up inside of him, and all these emotions confused him. Evil means morally bad, wicked or harmful, Jimmy was non of these things, he was a victim of racial prejudice.

The first way in which Jimmy got driven to his anger, was when he had gone to find a job and he did his job all correctly and put all his hard work into it, but his boss would always make up an excuse so they wouldn't have to pay him fully. This happened on a number of occasions and because he was black he couldn't do anything about it, there was nobody to complain to or tell if this happened because black people were always wrong to the white. Even after he did a job the boss would never give him a reference.

When he was young at school he was misunderstood. One day on a school day he had an important aboriginal ritual to go to and when he got back to school he got whipped.

Cheap College Papers on Is Jimmy Blacksmith Evil?

One of the jobs that Jimmy had was one that betrayed his aboriginal friends, he was asked to kill them. He did this and was so ashamed of what he did that he burned his uniform and quit his job. I think this shows in a lot of ways that Jimmy was not evil, if Jimmy was evil he wouldn't have been disappointed in himself and burn his clothes.

Another way in which people drove him to madness is when he was getting married to a white woman, a lady asked if she was a pure white person, because she was so shocked she repeated this question more than once. I think that Jimmy Blacksmith was fed up with all the smart comments he got from people especially the ones who were happy to see that his son was not really his and was white. When his wife was having the baby, he was not allowed to help or go near the house, even when the baby was born he was not allowed to go in, he found out that his wife had given birth to a baby boy when some other visitors who had seen the baby were on there way out and told him. Jimmy was so happy that he had a baby boy that he started dancing.

Jimmy's younger brother and uncle came to meet the wife and baby, and let them stay with them. Jimmy was living on the land that he had been working onfor the last few months with his wife, he got paid in groceries. One day the boss made up an excuse that Jimmy had not been working as hard as he usually dose, and he had turned his land into a 'Black camp' so he didn't get any food or groceries to feed his family. This made Jimmy angry, so his uncle and himself went to confront the boss's wife, but she did not have any pity for Jimmy. She started making jokes and then ordered them to go away. But that was it for Jimmy, he could not take any more so he killed them. This was out of anger and rage, he was not thinking right, I think that he didn't know haw to handle it so he used violence. After this Jimmy declared war. He ran away with his brother, even though his brother did not approve of the violence and killing.

I think the main reason why Jimmy killed people is because he didn't know how to get out of the situations that he got himself into. I don't think Jimmy was evil, the word 'evil' is too strong, I think that the white people were the real enemies because they were the ones who started to use violence in the first place. The white people were unfair to the aborigines, and Jimmy was the only one who tried to stand up to them.
